Echo News 'Fans should get excited' - Blues boss Maher on side's play-off push

By Chris Phillips. Chief sports reporter.

KEVIN Maher wants Southend United's fans to get excited by the Shrimpers' push for the play-offs - but stressed he would not be doing likewise at this stage.

Blues' 2-1 win at Eastleigh on Saturday saw Maher's side move to within a point of the top seven.

However, the Blues boss is refusing to look too far ahead.

"It's for the fans to be excited and they should get excited about that but it's up to us to stay calm and go game by game," said Maher.

"I said the other day we had nine cup finals, we've got eight now.

"We've got to keep ticking them off and keep getting points on the board.

"We need to ask questions of the teams above us so we have to keep on training properly, recover the right way and do everything you can to be ready for the games."

The eighth placed Shrimpers are now just a point behind the top seven following Saturday's success at the Silverlake Stadium.

And Maher was thrilled to secure an important victory.

"I'm delighted," said the Blues head coach.

"It was tough there for a period but when you come away from home against a rival you're going to have to defend at times.

"But overall I thought we thoroughly deserved the three points."

The Shrimpers dominated the first half and led 2-0 at the break, courtesy of goals from Tom Hopper and Gus Scott-Morriss.

Hopper's goal came in the opening minute of the match.

And Maher was it provided the perfect platform for Blues to build on.

"It was a great delivery from Morts (James Morton) and I think Hops (Tom Hopper) nearly got on the first one but it just dropped to him and it gave us a great start," said Maher.

"It gave us a great base to work from too."

Hopper was joined on the score-sheet by Scott-Morriss who netted for the 17th time this season.

And Maher admitted it was important to score again before the break.

"To go in 2-0 up was really pleasing," said Maher.
"Leon (Parillon) did brilliantly for the goal and Gus has popped up again to score it so I was really pleased with that.

"It was what we deserved going in at half-time for how we played.

"We didn't give them much at all and we had control of the game."

But Blues did not have things all their own way in the second half with Tyrese Shade scoring 10 minutes after the break.

"We spoke at half-time about doing the basics right because you can imagine they're going to come out fighting in the second half," said Maher.

"What we can't do is do something to give them momentum in the game.

"That goal did it and it was just a loose pass.

"Leon had got the assist so we're saying go on, do it again but it was a loose one, they counter and all of sudden momentum is there.

"They start putting balls in the box and asking questions.

"You've got to deal with it and we did."

I’d be a lot more excited if Kev hadn’t shut up shop and we’d won a couple of the 14 draws we’ve had this season - because then we WOULD be in a play off position. Yesterday he shut things down and got away with it - just.
It's a fine balance. Yesterday we are 2-0 up, and because we are going for a third, Gubbins has gone marauding forward with no cover behind him. We lose the ball, he can't get back in time, and they score. From a game we were totally dominant, we have now handed the reigns to them, and are suddenly hanging on.

Yep, and I did wonder if Parillon getting subbed within 5 minutes was punishment for that error. But if we have a player like him who's prepared to run at people and take risks, sometimes it isn't going to come off and we're going to lose possession and get hit on the break like yesterday. I'd still prefer to see us taking those chances and having a go at teams - because we have better players than most of them - for example Eastleigh. Yesterday was a great result, but we got away with one - we should have come out all guns blazing when they scored, not retreating into our shell.

More likely the sub that come on, have weakened us

Or taken off as that was the third successive time he’d lost the ball and Maher was trying to win the game?

Anyway, even after he went off we had the much better of the chances.

That’s just not how football works though. You can’t have it all your own way, all of the the time - especially away from home.
True, it's rare to dominate from start to finish and usually there is a sticky spell to navigate. I think the worry is the pattern a number of times where we've started brightly and dominated then for whatever reason declined into rather fearful, nervy football. We rarely score more than two and haven't kept a clean sheet in 10 so each game is nerve shredding. You can be under a bit of pressure and still be comfortable but not us. We don't seem to see a game out very well. The stats and the run we're on is great and the excellent result Saturday has further set up an exciting run in. We go onto Boston which the bare stats suggest we should go into with confidence but I'm not sure any of us has a clue how it will play out which is at odds with the run of results.

If only Gubbins was as quick to get back as he was to maraud forward. Shouldn’t he be fit? Hasn’t looked it in games at all

I think you're right, which is a real shame because we are going into the final furlong with something to play for.

Of course, I'd love us to have won all 38 games we've played so far 5-4 but, more than anything, I want my money's worth. I think one of the best parts about being a Shrimper is almost always having something to play for at the business end of the season.

We're there again, in the mix. LFG.

Maybe I'm understanding the comments above incorrectly. But why would you want to be 'entertained' if it meant we didn't win. I.e a 3-3 draw etc.

I'd rather play scrappy and win 1-0 with a goal off someone's backside. I think this whole 'being entertained' is a load of nonsense. I go to game to watch us earn three points and don't really care how they're earned.

If you read what Kevin actually said after the game, he wanted Leon to push on for more of what he’d delivered in the first half.

He also said that he’d briefed on Eastleigh coming out fighting in the second half, something everyone with half an open mind would have called.

He advised against giving the opposition momentum in the game, which went pear shaped when we set them up with an attack and an easy goal.

After Leon’s third misplaced pass, and with Eastleigh pushing back, it was important that Kev minimised the threat.

Leon’s loose ball that gifted them the goal and the subsequent two further poor passes that were ultimately snuffed out hopefully gives a bit of perspective that the often-wheeled-out trope that “attack is the best form of defence” is naive at best.

When the same people each week are calling for “Subs Kev!! Change it!!” then calling the subs useless, you get some insight into the problems.

Three points from Kev’s game management in a tough away game where the opposition is fighting hard is what I see.
