Facebook on holiday

This is the first of two Facebook discussions had whilst at work today, so I thought I'd find out where the good people of SZ stand.

One of my best female mates has been on holiday to Malia for the last week, and basically everyday she was updating her Facebook status with things like "is sunbathing and loving it", "is getting ready to go out" that sort of stuff.

Basically I mentioned this in the office today as she is back and I was the only one that thought this was wrong. If your on holiday, why the hell are you on Facebook? In my opinion, thats shocking. When I go away, I stay well clear of the internet in general. I try to relax and chill out basically, although I get the SUFC text's and my brother updates me with big football stories.

Yet people on the office thought that it was fine to go on Facebook and the like, and even admitted to doing it themselves.

Where do you lot stand? Do you update your Facebook status whilst away, or do you stay well clear?

I have done it, whilst on holiday in the UK as I've got free internet access on my phone but wouldn't bother that much abroad, unless there was free/cheap internet in the hotel.

I know a few people that are on holiday now and have been updating their status'.

As for me I'm with BoyWonder I'd try to stay clear of it, you're on holiday supposed to be a break and a change from your everyday life.

I suppose it depends where you go and what you have to say.

When on holiday in Cape Town I visited an internet cafe most days as it worked out about 50p for an hour's access. It was easy to keep updated with news, access a few messageboard sites and send some emails, it was certainly cheaper than phoning people or sending loads of texts.

The other question is about how often and what you update your status about. Some people will go on about everything as if the smallest detail is somehow significant to the wider world. I suspect these people 'collect' friends as a sort of badge of honour. However, if you don't want to hear from them you can always remove their friendship.

I'm fairly new to this facebook malarky, and discussing protocols on another board, a mate gave me some great advice that you only become friends with people you actually know and want to be friends with.

Personally I dont really want to look at the internet when I am away. I woud much rather be out and about. If I like Galsgow had free internet I expect I would be more keen to see the SUFC news.

I think that whole status thing is a bit bent. Personally use if for a bit of SUFC related banter now and again but some of the ones I have seen of late.

Using facebook full stop is a bit mantal.. Ok if you want to keep in touch with relatives in Oz its cheaper than a phone call but there are plenty of private web messaging and video call things.. Publishing your life to a world that doesnt give a toss takes a certain kind something I dont get.. Reading it it even more strange...
