FA Cup idea

MK Shrimper

Striker
Heard this idea on the radio yesterday and initially thought it was a load of crap, until today's dull as Yorkshire ditchwater draw.....

Basically at round 3, Prem teams and non-Prem teams are kept seperate, therefore giving a better chance for a minnow to get a nice payday and a bit of glory.... let's face it the FA Cup will only be won by one of 4 clubs, so why not let Havant & Waterlooville play Arsenal and Col Ewe play Reading?

Because that's what they did in the League Cup and it ruined it. It's an awful idea, and will just give the big boys the chance to plan to drop players.

The whole idea of the cup is that you don't know who you're gonna get some the Mancs might get the Gooners, followed by the Scousers, the Toffees, the Spurs etc whilst Millwall can draw nobody and get to the Final.

If you're guaranteed a big club by being rubbish then you might as well stay in bottom division of the league for ever and guarantee yourself at least one big payday a year.

And at our level, we'd be guaranteed a Barnsley / Stoke / Plymouth every season, so that's great.

NO, no, no, no, no.

Hmmm, that's controversial to say the least.

The 'magic of the Cup' (in quotes due to the cliche) is partly on its randomness and arguably that's one of the reason why it has an unassailable position as the most respected cup in the world.

Plus it doesn't do us much good does it? In fact, we'd still be drawn against Barnsley -or worse- with that system in this round. Even if you extended beyond R3 (and I don't know how that would work), as we're not going to be the smallest team in it until probably QF stage at least. If it only applies to round 3 in which case, why bother? Plus, what do you do with the other non-Prem clubs in R3, as there aren't enough to go around (20 as against 44 non-Prem).

Remember Millwall got to the finally by jammily avoiding anyone decent until the final, which is all part of the Cup.

So, no sale here, sir, I'm afraid.

Anyway, as to our fixture with Barnsley, what do you think are our prospects of it being on telly? :hilarious: :hilarious:

Why would we? 64 teams in the 3rd round, 20 Prem & top 12 Championship in one bag, the rest in another. Guaranteed a more glamorous tie than Dagenham and if anyone thinks that the FA Cup won't be won by either Arsenal/Liverpool/Man Utd/Chelski then they're deluding themselves.

And from round 4 onwards, it can go back to unseeded.

I sometimes think that it would be a good idea to make Prem teams start at least 6 players who have started over 75% of league games in all cup games. That way, disrespect towards the competition and the lower level teams would go out the window, and it would make the idea in the first post of the thread much more credible if it were to be put into action.

I suggest they go back to the way it was in the Late 1800s ... everyone in the same hat at the start, we could get scores like Preston beating Hyde United 26-0 again, i think that'd be excellent !!!

MotD would have to be on for about 4 hours to show all the goals :D :D

Thats sounds a lot more fun doesnt it! Plus the tiny teams would get a better chance of getting to play a massive team. You know the big boys wouldnt be happy with it, what with all the games the top 6 or 7 prem teams have to play each season already.

Yeah, poor souls .. and all for a measly £50k a week ... life is so unfair sometimes ;)

And the very same lot that sanctioned the rise in CL games to about a million a year ... double standards from the top clubs .. surely not

Man Utd would put out their under 16s and still beat some of the clubs that play in the Qualifying rounds :D

Well ACTUALLY a football pundit on 5-Live raised it and I originally thought it was a lot of bolleaux, but after the draw v Barnsley I could see the reasoning behind it.

Horrid idea. No wonder the FA Cup is losing it's place at the heart of English football when people suggest things like this. It was bad enough when they got rid of all those replays, let alone when they moved the 3rd Round to before Christmas.

The FA Cup is, and always has been, the greatest Cup Competition in the World. Leave it be.

But in the last 18yrs or so it's been won by the same 4 clubs and probably will be for the next 18.

I'm sorry but any romance has long gone thanks to the domination of the big 4.

So you'd rule out the possibility of them meeting one another early on?

The odds on that are tiny.... give the non leaguers and the small clubs a pay day 'cos they sure as eggs is eggs, they aren't going any further than the 4th round.

Let the randomness of it all take over from round 4 until either Arsenal/Liverpool/Man Utd/Chelsea win it. Again.
