Argh I voted for the wrong team!!! FML

Please could someone vote the opposite way to cancel it out.
Thanks!!

This is a really tough call. At first glance I thought the B's had too much for the P's, obviously Peter Butler cancels himself out here, so that leaves Bentley & Bailey vs Pountney, Clark & Taylor, could they strangle the supply to that amazing B frontline? This requires thought and some persuading from the managers methinks.

As much as I love Benno, Powell will have him in his pocket and have the freedom to move up the field, supporting Spud. But the B's frontline is very good. Hmmmmm.

Right this is a real tricky tie for me, so lets see how i can overcome a very good P team

Hmm, well firstly let me just say i'm up against my favorite ever SUFC goalie, a LB who is 2nd only to Sir SVC as my favorite Blue ever and the only man to have been voted Player Of The Year 3 times

My keeper comes from a different era, anyone seen the old pathe newsreels from the 1920s where it looks as if players legs are moving at a million miles an hour but actually not going anywhere ?? thats Billy Moores era, no gloves, no protection from the referee and a dead weight lace up leather football being propelled at you, to manage over 300 games in such an environment is a huge achievement. Oh and after finishing playing he had to return to the job market, working in a Wearside shipyard before dying aged just 59. You may not be able to relate to Moore like you can to Sammy, but he is every bit a real Blues hero

P are weak in one area of diffence, Glenn Pennyfather was a central midfielder, not a RB and up against Nicky Bailey he wouldn't have a prayer, leading to a succession of chances for the deadly Angell, Best and Garner battery up front, centre mid too, where Paul Clark featured only briefly for us, he'd be outpaced by all of my midfielders letting them break unopposed onto the back 4, or giving away freekicks which Garner and Angell will lay on a plate for ace ace ACE goal getter BILLY BEST, a scorer of a club record NINE hattricks, 10 goals in the 1968/69 FA Cup campaign. Peter Silvester ans Steve 'Inch' Phillips had decent scoring rates for us, but my support strikers scored more than them combined and so add Best to the list and i don't see how P would stop me scoring

Ok, but apart from Prior, Powell, Sansome, Pountney, Scully and Butler ..........

How are P going to stop me ??

Because my frontline is actually pretty decent. 100 goals between them and supplied by Taylor. Bentley is a top class RB but my midfield is fairly fluid, and can get behind the attacking Bailey and Benno to expose what is quite a weak defence.

Could anyone that saw Garner & Best play tell us what they were like as players? Were they goal poachers or could they create their own chances, did they work hard and create opportunities for others? It could make the difference here.

Billy Best after all these years remains my favourite Blues player, a Scot signed from Northampton Town, and became an instant hit at Roots Hall. Lethal in the box and played well of either Garner or Gary Moore who created a lot of chances for the will'o'the wisp Best. While he benefitted from playing alongside a big centre forward he was adeept at creating and scoring his own chances. A bit of a poor mans Jimmy Greaves is the best description. Probably my favourite memory was against Brentwood in the cup in 1968/69, Blues were cruising at 5-1 with around 20 minutes to go, and Billy realised he hadn't scored, and promptly thumped 5 past the bewildered non league side as we ran out winners 10-1.

Bill Garner was your typical English centre forward big & raw when he joined us from Bedford, but he soon developed into a bloody good centre forward, powerful & dominant in the air, and for a big fella not bad on the floor. His finest moment came when we lost to Chelsea 1-0 in the League Cup. He gave the Chelsea defence such a battering that they promptly signed him for 100k. He had a long and successful time playing at the top level.

Thanks Canvey

No doubt it's a close one, for me the P's lack in the attacking third but win the midfield battle it comes down to a few direct balls bypassing the more attacking Bailey & Bentley, allowing Garner to provide and Best to weave his magic. Extra time win for the B's.

...............A.E.T.
..........B's 2 - 1 P's
Best 38, 112 ...Phillips 71

Ok here is how I see it (probably as much as you'll get from me today because I'm really busy).

Now it's not rocket-science to see that Bluebloods Barstewards (as I've nickednamed them) look pretty deadly in attack. Best and Angell are both probably in our top-10 strikers of all time. But they are up against undoubtedly the best defence in this competition for Pathletico Pubéy, and containing Sansome, Prior, Powell and Scully we've got arguably 4 of our best 5 ever defenders/keepers. I'm not saying that we will definitely keep a clean sheet, however I'm confident we have strength on the flanks, through the middle and with our goalkeeper to limit any mistakes. Angell and Best are deadly strikers, but were never proven at the highest level like Prior, Scully and Powell were.

Now, in midfield I've again got quite a defensive set-up, which again I think will limit the effectiveness of the Barstewards. Bailey and Benno don't look to thread through balls for the forwards, instead Bailey will sit deeper and my defence will nullify any long-balls. Clark and Butler will stop any late runs and will be first to react to loose balls on the edge of the box... key because Benno and Bailey are deadly from these positions.

In terms of my attack, Taylor and Pountney are very competent and creative wingers. Able to come inside and also show some skill to supply the front line of Silvester and Phillips. Now my strikers have a very respectable scoring record for this competition (100 goals in total for SUFC), and against Journeyman Butters and Adam "fancy a cuddle on the edge of the box" Barrett will get chances and exploit space that they'll leave behind.

The Barstewards are too top heavy, and against a terrific defence they're unlikely to get the couple of goal lead that they'd need against my team.

FT:
Bluebloods Barstewards 1 - Pathletico Pubéy 2

Thats a great summing up Pubes .. though to be fair i've never complained about anything being too top heavy but thats probably for another thread in the pub another time :winking:

Really difficult tie this but I believe that Pubey's Pathetics have more all round ability so I go for a P win
