European football

Reading in the sun today that wycombe are just a two legged tie away from european football. I thought that you had to be atleast championship level to host european football. Personally if you qualify you should be able to play. If by some chance we made the final and lost to say arsenal liverpool chelsea etc, where would that leave us?

Nowhere. Only the winner of the League Cup qualifies for Europe. Yes, even if the winner has qualified via other means.

This seems open to question. I don't know the definitive answer. However, as far as I am concerned winners of trophies that lead to qualification to European football should be admitted into the competition.

Pretty sure this was all discussed at great length before the draw for this round. Can someone find the thread..... Rather than going through the Same exact arguments....

Of course we wouldn't qualify.

If necessary they would have to change the rules. They aren't adverse to changing the rules after the event - see how Liverpool wormed their way in and the basis of having to allow a big club get their own way.

If we were to win the cup and were alos relegated to Div. 1 we would still qualify for Europe. Gretna played in Europe this season dispite being a Scottish 2nd Division club!!

It has also not been confirmed that losers would qualify IF winners had pre qualified for Europe. So there is a possibility that we could win a UEFA place if we lost in the final.

No, there is a possibility that Tottenham/Arsenal/Liverpool/Newcastle would qualify if they lost in the final, but there is no way they would allow us or Wycombe to qualify if either of us lost in the final.

Expect an announcment to be made only once we've been got out of the way.

No we wouldn't. This as mentioned has been covered in depth elsewhere & somebody found a UEFA regulation that stated even if you won a cup, you had to be in the top 2 tiers of domestic football in the season you were to compete in Europe.

Gretna were 2nd division when they "qualified" by being the SFA Cup runners-up but had been promoted to the 2nd tier (Division 1) of Scottish football by that time.

Also, as per previous years e.g. Wigan last year, runners up in the Carling cup do NOT qualify for Europe, the PL take that UEFA Cup place for the next highest league finish.

I don't believe anyone ever did find a UEFA regulation of that nature. A lot of hearsay but nothing concrete regarding regulations to the level of football the team had to be playing at.

I thought it all related to when Calais qualified for the UEFA Cup despite being in the lowest professional level of French football, the rules were then changed, but at the same time they also relaxed the rules on where you could play if you did qualify (e.g. Gretna's ground wasn't up to scratch for European football) so they played at Motherwell's Fir Park.

How would either of us be different to Millwall then?
