Euro 2008, A Blessing in Disguise?

Does anyone else think that our failure to qualify may well be a blessing in disguise?

Firstly it got rid of McClaren, who I think pretty much everyone would agree was an uninspired choice in the first place, and secondly it has given Capello a unique opportunity to experiment for a season before we play a competitive game.

Sadly its a blessing in disguise because if we'd qualified the hype would just be starting to crank up now, reaching its crescendo shortly before a quarter-final exit on penalties to a team that will get knocked out in the semis.

I doubt we would have got through the group stages tbh!

I'd have been happier had we qualified.

McClaren would never have lasted beyond the tournament. In poker there's a common phrase, "a chip and a chair", meaning that as long as you have those two, you're still alive and anything can happen.

If England were at the tournament, they would have still had approximately a 11/1 shot by my valuation. which is not much more than most tournaments we qualify for.

It's going to be four years between tournaments and I can't hink of any significant insight Capello seems to have made which justifies this.
