England V Ireland

Not a great watch so far and a game rarely is when one team consistently gets so many players back behind the ball.

Madueke has some skills but would find him a very frustrating player to watch regularly especially when he stops playing to appeal to the referee.

Thought the pre-match piece on Dave Watson * was harrowing.Hope he enjoyed the 2nd half-I cetainly did.

* Younger brother of our very own Peter Watson (who Wiki tells me died in 2013)Older zoners- like me- will remember him as a great CH for us back in the early 60's.

That one game against Greece, could have cost Carsley the No 1 job, as all other games have been quality , bold decision to drop Kane and it paid off handsome
Just wonder if he was told they had TT in the frame to him prior, either way he has laid solid foundations after the good work by Southgate
The future looks very bright

Guillem Balague’s insisted that the FA offered Guardiola the job shortly after Southgate resigned in July, and that he considered it for a few weeks before ultimately letting the FA down, albeit softly. Balague’s generally on the money with stories related to Guardiola, and that would certainly fit with the timeline that’s played out between Southgate resigning and Carsley being named caretaker.

I don’t think the Greece game cost Carsley the job - I think he was ultimately told it would not be him as the FA throw the kitchen sink at winning one of the next two/three tournaments. Given the squad, I think the FA has considered they don’t have time to allow Carsley to find his feet on the job like Southgate did.

Carsley’s used this Nation’s League campaign as a test bed for different approaches and to bring through a new generation. He’s ultimately done that while winning the group, and should be applauded. He’s put 7/8 young players in the shop window for Tuchel over the last few months - the likes of Jones, Hall, Gomes, Madueke have all staked a serious claim.

Jones in particular has been excellent I think, and he must now be talked about being the one that comes into that midfield three alongside Rice and Bellingham. What that means for Foden is down to him really, he really needs to rediscover himself a bit.

The position that will cause most concern is very obviously centre forward. Kane’s lost a yard or three and while he’s certainly a great player with clear credentials, I don’t think Watkins instills the same kind of confidence that Kane has done before.

I think that is the one area of the starting line up where if we are missing our first choice, it’s a huge drop off to the next cab off the rank.

If a chance comes along, I’d back Kane to bury it all day long, whereas I don’t have the same confidence in Watkins, although he obviously took that chance against the Netherlands.

Then, after Watkins, Toney has basically kissed his international career goodbye with his move, then it’s another drop to Solanke.

Who is there after that?

As for the game itself. I’m taking full credit for the second half performance. I watched the first half, then just after half time my youngest was so tired so went to put him to bed, when I got him to sleep and came back downstairs, we were 5-0 up, so you’re welcome.

Kane is world class but he slows the play down. Although Watkins isnt as deadly in front of goal his all round game might create more opportunities for players around him. The last couple of games have shown there are plenty of other goalscorers in the team and that's without Saka, Foden, Palmer, Grealish.
