Electro

Whilst we are on the topic of music, I have just recieved and listening to Electro collection.
Classic stuff! I had all Electro on vinal (only for a school mate to borrow them for a session and never got them back!)
I like all kinds of music, mainly being Radiohead and Pink Floyd throught to the Pixies, but this stuff is class!

Anyone else remember the likes of DOUG E FRESH & THE GET FRESH CREW?

I do like 80s electronic music before it became all crash bang wallop stuff like.....
Depeche Mode
New Order
Erasure
Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Human League
Ultravox
and so on.....

Aah yes the Street Sounds Electro series. That was basically the only thing on my (brick sized) sony walkman from 1982-86.

I've got to buy the compilation that was brought out last year to re-live the memories.

Electro 6 is the stand out album for me, it was the time of all the real roxanne versus roxanne shante versus UTFO.

Happy days

Yeah Electro 6 was good. I think it went a bit sloppy after Electro 11 though, and my fav is Electro 3 with the outstanding 'what people do for money'.

Its worth getting this CD mate, there are a few on there that dont really have the right to be but there are a hell of a lot of classics, such as;
AFRIKA BAMBATEE- PLANET ROCK
EGYPTIAN LOVER- EGYPT EGYPT (from E3 I think?)
and wait for it......................

THE PACKMAN- IM THE PACKMAN!!!!!!!

Go to play.com Album is called The definitive electro & hip hop collection.

I owned electro 13.
The only track on it i can remember is "Square dance rap".

Loved that old stuff at the time, loved the Beat Street soundtrack and 'Breakdance' the movie which included an early Ice T track called reckless.

I have both "Beat Street" and "Breakdance-The Movie" on DVD. The former is far more believable (for the most part) and far better (apart from the cheesy ending) whilst the latter is just pure escapism and a lot of fun. Believe it or not but I used to be one of those who used to 'break' in Southend High Street back in the early 80s. I was a helluva lot slimmer then ...

Favourite tracks include "Al-Naafiysh" by Hashim, the ultimate hip-hop track, "On The Upside" by Xena, "Hip Hop Be Bop (Don't Stop) by Mann Parrish (as featured in 'Shaun of the Dead'), "Wildstyle" by Timezone, "King of the Beat" by Pumpkin, "Breakers' Revenge" by Arthur Baker (who produced and remixed a lot of New Order stuff), most early stuff from the Tommy Boy label, particularly Planet Patrol, and of course the one and only "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force, who I saw live at the Pink Toothbrush in Rayleigh back in 1985.

A tad harsh I know, as I never knew you back then, but I have a vision.

You obviously missed the "comeback" at the Shagor just before we left for Spain!! Now even I found it comical!!

I have always championed the guitar/bass/drum/singer set up. Amazing as currently my whole spare time is spent fiddling with samplers and "VST Soft instruments" whilst trying to complete a sound engineering/ musicians scholorship type rubbish certificate.
However, unbelivably this last six months I have orgasmed over Joy Division and cried over the lost potential of Sigue Sigue Sputnik.

Good call JS, about eight years ago Tommy Boy brought out three triple cd box sets to commemorate 25 years of recording and they were superb!

I still have them on high revolution in my CD player especially all the early stuff.

I stuck on "Beat Street" last night and I suddenly remembered that I also saw Afrika Bambaataa & the Soul Sonic Force up in London (I think it was the Lyceum) in the same year and met up with some of the Rock Steady Crew (including my hero Crazy Legs) during a half-time dance-off. Friends of mine (Capricorn Rockers) were one of the best breakers in the country and were thrilled to meet these legends AND dance with them ... feck me I feel old!
