EFL Trophy may be scrapped

[barna]According to the Guardian[/barna], Shaun Harvey, head of the EFL, says the EFL Trophy may be scrapped. Clearly this year's experiment didn't go as well as hoped...

That's not the significant bit in that story

Harvey was speaking at the launch of EFL Futures, another new initiative to help develop young, homegrown talent. A prize fund of £2.25m is to be distributed across Football League clubs over the next three seasons according to the number of appearances made by English players under the age of 21 (for Newport County and Cardiff, the players must be Welsh).

We haven't fielded a player under the age of 24 this last month.

"Funded from the EFL’s 1% youth development levy, the league hopes to nudge clubs into giving academy talent more first team opportunities. The scheme will also be supported by Sky, who will mark the names of young prospects with a red F when they appear on live broadcasts".

Am I being thick (most likely)!!..... but would the significance of the red F stand for? Future? (as in future prospect) .....Wouldn't "Y" for (Youth) make more sense?

That's because many of our players have been signed by bigger clubs. Do you remember Bentley and Payne ?. From our current under 18 age group, 6 players have moved to other clubs.

Bentley's 23 and Payne's 22. Neither would qualify for payments if this rule was in place this season.

It would be the likes of Jack Bridge, Ted Smith, Harry Kyprianou, Dan Matsuzaka (although if he's declared for Japan this might rule him out) etc who would qualify for these payments.

You posted that we had not fielded a player under 24 in the last month...Not 21.

Perhaps you should pop along to the Hall and you might find out why we have kept the same team.

Were we really that poor against Coventry that we couldn't have given Jack Bridge a 20 minute run out at 3-0 up?

If there was any long term we'd be looking to develop players for the future.

That's why we have an academy. That's why we have young players on the bench and part of the squad on match-days. But 9 games ago we needed the Anton, Oxley,Cox, Ranger, and all the other senior players to make sure we have a future in the first place.

When we lost at home to Fleetwood we had 3 different threads, each with about 15 pages all demanding PB be hung from the yard arm. I don't remember you coming on here and saying "but at least he played Jack Bridge."

Like any job the youngsters will be much better off learning from good, experienced tradesmen. As much as you wanted PB sacked, you should forget your personal dislike of the man and get down to RH this Christmas. Following Southend has given me years of unbridled misery. But right now the football is really good. Would be a shame for anyone who calls themselves a fan to miss out. Because with our club you can't guarantee we won't be doing a Col U next season.
