Have two opinions:

1. Great to see we are trying a "Plan B", rather than sticking to the same every time.

2. Doesn't this show the squad is unbalanced, with not enough wide players and left sided players in general?

Discuss...

Interesting that Matt Harrold ISN'T in tonights squad despite not having signed for anyone else. Maybe he has got Scouts tonight?

could it be "Plan B" should we fail to attract the kind of wide players we want?

According to ST this new 'diamond formation' is 'difficult to explain'. Well, that's no problem, with ST's eloquent use of the English language he will find it easy to put it across. I am almost tempted to hop on a plane in order to be at Great Wakering tonight. I have an idea that what will go on between the touchline and the players could be as interesting as what we shall see on the pitch. One shouldn't laugh..............should one????

Its a good idea to try... but in reality I feel we are only doing this because we have no wingers! Imo this a complete change of how we play, as we always push to get the ball wide at every opportunity, this is a narrow way of playing and rather than putting a lot of crosses into the box this is involves feeding the strikers with through balls... usually best employed with pacy strikers this doesn't fit with the signing of Paul Furlong who I would imagine is at his most dangerous in the air?!

Gutted I can't get down there tonight... looking forward to hearing how we get on :)

who would be the defensive midfielder and who would be the attacking one just behind front two?
i reckon bailey defensive and mccormack attacking

Yea, though the defensive midfielder is normally the 'destroyer' and the guy further forward the creator. Which is where we could stuggle as our midfielders have quite the mixed personality in terms of what boxes they fit into.

This formation would be best employed with Maher! Come back Kev!

If we got Mulgrew, it could definately suit our full-backs (with Francis) pushing forward to provide width, but then you really need intelligent and disciplined defenders to shuffle across, or your defensive midfielder to drop into the area vacated by the fullback should the attack break down.

Be interesting, but its a formation I like - and one quite popular at the Euros.

With our current personnel my guess would be Bailey anchoring, Macca and the Moose slightly to the right and left respectively, with Scannell in a free role.

Yep, that's how I see it as well. Be interesting to see how it pans out tonight.

For anyone who is interested, this is Ian Joyce. Also spent some time at Grays last season but never played for them.

He looks like he's reseeding the pitch, could be there some time using that method.

That being the case, I cant see why we didnt hold onto Black as i think he would have flourished in a "free" role

Cant see it working. Dont have a natural defensive player. Macca and Bailey both like getting forward, Moussa isnt a great tackler and Scannel is still a rough diamond. We need to buy at least 2 more midfielders as at the mo those are the only 4 mids we have, any injuries or suspensions we are buggered. Plus our strikers arent particularly mobile which doesnt lend itself to this system.

I agree with you that his abilities are far more suited to that role. I think that Black's departure may have been made fairly inevitable by personality clashes. We saw some evidence on the pitch and who knows what may have been said about his work ethic off of it? If there was disharmony there then maybe it's best to draw a line under it and move on. No one player is more important than a good team spirit.
