Echo: Man-made islands for Thames Estuary?

Che's Left Foot

Not sure what other people think of this, but personally, I think it's a brilliant idea:

Man-made islands for Thames Estuary?

Looks great.. If the indutrial bit was all windmills and tidal power stuff that wouldnt look to grim..But they seem to have overlooked the sunken ship with a hiroshima sized amount of tnt on it ;-)

oooohh errr missus.. never realised there could be gas and bio weapons on board... I think we need to start an SZ campaign to raise it, especially as it's a pontential terrorist target.

Blowing up the SS Richard Montgomery will create the Islands I would of thought.;)

All for another road to Kent though.

Cricko old boy you don't know how close to the truth you really are. My dear departed pop was in the Merchant Service and well remembered the SS Montgomery getting banked in the Thames. He was docked at Tilbury at the time awaiting sailing papers to board ship for one of his least favorite destinations, Malta (place was always getting bombed and considered the worst trip second only to the Russian Convoys)

When the news filtered through that Monty had banked the general feeling was to get a train to Liverpool and sign onto another ship as the one in Tilbury wasn't going anywhere for days. It was common knowledge what it was carrying and where it was bound for. My dad reckoned that that ship was carrying over 3000 tons of explosives bound for France. The main concern was that the odd rogue U-Boat was still skulking about and just might try and have a potshot to see what might happen. Poor old Southend and the scraggy Kent coastline wouldn't have stood a chance.

Alot of the cargo was removed within 6 months of her banking but the forward holds are blocked and considered too dangerous to risk more removal although the general concenus is most of the remainder will be soaked through and made safe.

Saying that, Navy divers are still going down there every month, just to make sure. But salvage are still refused even a sniff at the thing.

I don't believe the 'Dirty Weapon' bo!!ocks for one minute and for a very good reason. My old man knew actually what they were carrying because as he said, ' We needed to know what we had on board, just in case we could flog it the other end' :D Proper British attitude to the war.

Great idea in my opinion. I can't see massive industry being allowed on any of the islands, and I don't remember reading in the Echo that industry was going to be expansive anyway. But I'm all for the 'sustainability' and 'national park' ideas for it. The bridge to Kent is a great idea if they can improve roads to the east of the borough to serve it, and they need to make sure that the weakening of the tidal surges up the river that the islands are meant to bring about doesn't cause an increase in tidal surges down this end!
