EBAY

Davros

The Whippet
me and a mate were having a convo at work after he saw my feedback was 312 (100% positive may i add).

Looking into it i have made 364 transaction, mainly purchases, which got me thinking how much i must have spent on ebay.

Most of my purchases are quite small, Cd's and the like, but with the odd £20-£30 thrown in... i work it out i must have done at least £2k in the last3 years on ebay...

Anyone done worse??

reckon i have done a bit.. can pick up some good classic clothing on there that you wouldn't find in shops..

No Dave, if you know your gear, you can indeed pick up some real kosher items of clothing.

My feedback is currently 681 (99.7% positive). Not sure how much I've spent but the money I've made from selling has bought me a Technics 1210, a Cambridge Audio amp, a 3g 20gb iPod, 2 SUFC season tickets, a 160gb Lacie hard drive, 2 CD/DVD burners, a 5 channel mixer, 3 month's worth of eating out every weekend and more that I can't remember.

If you are in the know you can get some great gear on eBay.

I have picked up some mint Leo Gemelli jumpers and Gallini sweatshirts.

Looking at my wardrobe you would swear that Rosehills was alive and kicking.

I also managed to pick up a brand new pair of Adidas Mundial Team astro boots which is a bargain because

1. They aren't made any more.
2. They used to retail for £70.

Cambridge Audio, a very sound device, i prefere my Mackie Amp though!

Unless you're a seller it's crap. I've been ripped off so many times as a buyer.  My feedback is 303 with 5 negs -  all as buyer and as a result of extortionate postage, goods not being as described, not received, paying for recorded delivery & receiving it second class,  etc . .

There is little recourse for buyers when it goes wrong, and ebay err to the seller in disputes.

Saying that as a seller you can make money but the sellers' fees are a bit steep. It's possible to sell anything, and for me it's antiques. There is always someone out there who will pay over the odds to buy something - far more than what the gear is really worth.

Can't agree with that at all - I've bought hundreds of items and have been disappointed very few times. I've also had a few disputes when I've been the seller and I've found that PayPal always side with the buyer. Depends on what you're buying/selling I guess.

If you don't like the postal fees then don't bid. Reason sellers often have higher than standard postal fees is to get round having to pay a high final value fee. Hence , you get a laptop for 99p but pay £250 postage.
Also, as a seller I can assure you that if you pay through paypal and dispute the purchase, unless the seller has a tracking number (which Royal Mail don't give you for standard first and second class) then the buyer ALWAYS wins.
I've posted about 700 parcels in all and only about 5 or 6 have got lost.
If anything doing Ebay has impressed on me that actually most people are honest and entirely reasonable..... apart from those from Ghana, who seem to think that you should send them the item and then they pay you what they think it's worth. Lost count of the amount of times I've had to report the buggers for non payment and their reply is 'Well, we haven't received it yet!'

Gave me a good laugh anyway!.

Bought one thing back in 2002. A 12" of a rare Inspiral Carpets track, cost about £5 with postage. Got it unwrapped it and then realised i had'nt got a record player.

Can't be assed with it!

Some fair points, and although I agree the majority of users are honest, any purchase is still a risk. As a seller. I make a point of refering to my neg feedback in my auction descriptions highlighting that I know what it's like to be shafted as a buyer which some of the buyers I've had relate to. Ironically it seems to exude trust. As regards postage, what you've stated is true, but thats obvious: anyone who is willing to pay in that respect is asking for it. It's where you think a reasonable p&p is offered but when received the packaging is woefully inept for the intended goods . . . like getting an MP3 player inside a Birds-eye fishfinger box !  I've received packets without postage too meaning I've had to pay twice. As a buyer  I've raised 6 disputes, 6 rescinded - 4 cheques & 2 paypal claims. Both paypal claims were for goods not as described.  With the cheques I found I was particularly vulnerable - anything that is £15 or less and a buyer raises a dispute ebay aren't interested.  From my experience, there is no clawback, buyers have little or no protection as the majority of whats on offer is no more than second hand goods.

Won't stop me using ebay as a seller though . . .  got some nice Victorian bits on at the moment

I used to use ebay quite a lot but now Ive got fed up paying ebay fee's and paypal fees!

Also The Royal Mail
mad.gif
Which have lost about 30% of the item's I have sent!

Keep your receipts, Royal Mail will choke up to the tune of £28 for first class items.
