Eastwood

fbm

Blue tinted optimist⭐🦐
From tonights Echo

Mark Stimson has told Blues to forget about signing him on the cheap.

We have apparently enquired about extending the loan spell. Stimmo reckons they will review things at the end of that spell. However, he knows he is going to lose the player.

I think he'll be out of our price bracket now and I'm not in favour of breaking the bank just to get one player. How good will he be if he gets badly injured? Good though he is, it's not worth skinting ourselves for.

I reckon you might be on your own there matey.

If we are going to achieve anything, ever again, we need better players. Eastwood has proved in 4 games for us, games for Grays, Charlton Res and Swindon Res, that he knows how to score goals.

Goals win games, won games gets promotion...

Lets do all we can to sign him. Maybe get donations from local businesses etc, someone to sponser his wages, give Grays a choice of players in exchange - Husbands, Broughton, Kightly on loan for the season etc...

It's worrying, i can't help but feel we will be priced out of this one.

I'd love us to sign Eastwood, but no... fbm isn't on his own. Signing players we simply couldn't afford is one of the reasons we're in the situation we're in now. The club has to be run on a sound financial basis.

And like our last games... goals do not guarantee a win. You could argue that we need to spend on our defense as well as our attack.

And I don't think real transfer funds are going to come from anywhere but SUFC.

Oh and Mark Stimson, w***er !

He is now saying its 'wishfull thinking' us wanting him for a nominal fee, but wasn't that the reason why he came on loan ?

to**er !

They probably gave a verbal gentlemans agreement of a "nominal fee" at the start for if he had'nt done as well as he has with the likes of Swindon,Gillingham and Charlton losing interest. With him doing as well as he has Gray's have thought nadgers to Southend lets get as much as we can from one of the bigger boys. Lets face it chaps all clubs would do the same thats life !

I;m sure for the right player, funds will be made available.

I agree with not breaking the bank, but Fredy doesnt look like some late 20's journeyman that we have ******* funds on before. He is a young, hungry and some say arrogant striker that at the moment has (or is proving) he can score goals at various levels - a type of player that is a precious find.

Whilst I also agree that goals dont guarantee wins, they do marvellous things for a teams confidence. Look at Man U at the mo, cannot buy a goal, but they arent shipping many - yet the confidence is low. OK, we lost our last game, but scored 2, got 4 the game before, a couple before that and all of a sudden, fans, players etc are up.

My fear now is that if Eastwood slips our grasp and we have a few bad games it could finish our season. Why not splash out a bit now on the risk that Fredy IS the player we think he is and give ourselves a chance of the play-offs or promotion?

Crowds are up, which hopefully Ron will see is down to the team playing well, on the up and scoring goals...

Anyway, we aren't talking millions. Tilly said a 'nominal fee' was agreed with a gentlemans agreement... Is Stimmo going to come off looking like a total git and **** off Eastwood in the process or is he just talking the talk?

In fairness, I think there may have been some confusion earlier.

My understanding is that the word "nominal" was never used initially... Tilly reported Grays wanted a "minimal" fee but I think he probably meant "minimum" fee as the two are definitely not the same thing.

There is no way Grays would have ever said "You can have Eastwood for a nominal/minimal fee".

But they MAY have said "We want a minimum £50 grand (or whatever) and if you're prepared to pay at least that then you can have him for a month"

We aren't going to sign Eastwood and I think we should get used to that.

Grays have cleverly used us to prove that he can score goals at league level - and now he will go to the highest bidder.

Grays were in a no-lose situation: he doesn't want to play for them clearly. If they send him to us and he does well, they will get plenty of offers and perhaps clubs bidding against each other. If he does ok we might sign him for a 'minimal' fee. If he does poorly, they get him and his ability back and tell him he's at his level with them and he needs to buck his ideas up if he wants to play football at all - meaning he either goes back to being a 30+ a season man for them or he's on the scrapheap completely...

We never stood a chance.

I blame Peter Mandelson.

But we have him for a month so lets get the max out of him that we can. Would we have beaten Swansea 4-2 with Drewe and Wayne?

I doubt it.

As I have said before, he's not our player, so if we can borrow him for a month and get a benefit during that time, then we're still up on the deal.

Its down to Ron Martin to get the cheque book out, we should pay an total of £100'000 to Grays for Eastwood and pay an extra £30,000 should we win promotion & 20% to Grays should we sold him to Premiership club.

Iam sure Eastwood would want to stay at Southend as he is an local boy & not far to travel for home game & training and also spend more time with his family or live in an dig on his own or with an flat mate in a s**t hole like Swindon. I know which one I would choose. He also get an chance to play 1st team football with us.

I'm impressed that your intimate knowledge of the clubs finances allows us to cough up those sums.

How on earth do we know what's available to pay?

Obviously there's something in the kitty, but I doubt it's as much as the £100K you suggest.

I would have thought that £50K plus a further £10 if we go up and a 30-40% share of the profits on a sell on should be more the ball park. However bear in mind we may not actually sell him... he could go on a Bosman in 3 years so that sort of deal may not be attractive to Grays.

What if they only want 40k? Should we still pay an (sic) total of 100k?
You must be infuriating to live with

I think we should ask Mrs SteveH...

At least he's not a slum landlord keeping his tenants in a house where the kitchen isn't even properly plastered or painted, and where one comes in during the afternoon to find the proprietor slumped asleep on the sofa in a post-alcohol induced slumber with Sky Sports News on the telly...

The kitchen is much better now, thank you

FWIW, I think Grays and Southend should get their heads together and thrash something out that will be acceptable to both clubs. Fredy obviously wants to come here... Grays want to make as much out of Fredy as possible... Southend want him at a price that will not hurt our present financial position.

The fact that our present attendances are up (and may continue to climb), must mean that we will have some extra spending power if needed. Let's make use of this now and get him on board. I suspect that the club may want to offload one or two players to compensate and I would suggest Williams (or is he youth team?) and Husbands. Broughton, I would keep on the books but if he is likely to be on the sidelines for a while, keep him out on loan, with a clause to bring him back if needed.

I know this could go on and on, but why let a player of Fredy's obvious quality go for someone else to benefit...? let's do what needs to be done, please!

wink.gif

Of course, the other reason for what Stimmo said might be that he wants to put the Grays fans down gently - he knows that Eastwood will be on his way soon to whoever it is, but he doesn't want it to sound as though Grays are just letting him go for next to nothing. By saying Southend will have to pay more than they think to get him, and then when the deal goes through saying that it's for an undiscolsed fee, everyone looks good from the deal, and not just Eastwood...

But then that might all be "wishful thinking"!
