Dutch International XI 2-3 Southend United (January 1937)

I'm still looking for that game, nothing so far.
I found this one though, there's also a bit about our two week tour of Germany in 1910.

On the 24th April 1931 Southend United played in Rotterdam against a Netherlands “B” team and came away with a 3-1 win. Here is a translated contemporary match report from a Dutch newspaper.

Yesterday we had another exhibition game of one of the national teams of the KNVB on the ground of Sparta. The international B team, so called, had a battle against the English professional club, Southend United.

Our team was:

Van der Wint (Velseroorder SV);Van de Griendt (Velseroorder SV), Haak (IJVV Stormvogels); Sterk (SC ‘t Gooi), Van der Berg (Sparta Rotterdam), Paulissen (PSV Eindhoven), Viergever (Sparta Rotterdam), Romondt (HBS Craeyenhout), Ophorst (HBS Craeyenhout), Van Kesteren (HBS Craeyenhout) and Hamstra (Alcmaria Victrix).

Southend United:

Billy Moore, Tom Dixon, Dave Robinson, Mickey Jones, Jack French, Fred Barnett, Dickie Donovan, Joe Johnson, Jimmy Shankly, Arthur Crompton, Joe Wilson.

It was an extremely weak display, especially before half-time; our team did not show the slightest initiative and it rattled across all lines, the goalkeeper Van der Wint, who has attracted attention due to his good performance in his club’s race against Feijenoord and Sparta, was undoubtedly the best of our players. He kept several of the Englishmen’s hard shots out of his goal. The pros’ first goal coming from the centre forward Shankly, after 25 minutes of play, was unstoppable for him.

In the second half, the Dutch were a bit more lively, but a lot more work needed to be done. After Barnett scored a great goal, Ophorst scored the only Netherlands goal from a Hamstra cross. It was again Shankly who made it 1-3 with a header.

A brace for Jimmy Shankly

I think Jimmy was the brother of the great Bill Shankly.

A bit more for you:

UNITED FOR AMSTERDAM
Unless there is a last minute hitch the United will be playing on foreign soil next Wednesday for they have an invitation to visit Amsterdam and oppose the famous Ajax club. Mr. E.L. Birnie has wired acceptance of the invitation and official sanction of the F.A. has now to be obtained. The team will sail next Monday night spending Tuesday looking round the Dutch capitol and playing their match on the Wednesday. The Ajax club is the leading team in Holland and the invitation is an honour to the Southend club and the town.

HOLLAND “B” 1-3 SOUTHEND UNITED
.
United at Rotterdam International Reserve team beaten
The match in Amsterdam turned out to be against what was in effect the National sides second team, which was a novel idea and one not used in the Home countries, though it was suggested that this may be idea worth adopting. The game was played in front of a large crowd but Southend found the opposition poor, in fact the Dutch who described Southend as their guests admitted that the score rather flattered the home side. After half an hour Shankly sent into a shot which the goalkeeper couldn’t hold and the Blues went in at half time a goal up. In the second half Southend played at their best, Barnett scored a second, the Dutch replied, from then on it was all Southend. Shankly added a third and after that it was only a matter of, could the Dutch hold out till the end of the game.

Th following Saturday Southend beat Watford 1-0 at the Kursaal and then on the following Monday:

Monday 27th April 1931
SOUTHEND UNITED 2-6 EVERTON
A benefit match for Jack French and Billy Moore
It was anticipated that under an arrangement made for the schools, many hundreds of schoolboys would be present, the match kicked off at 6.30 and a crowd of just over 8,000 were present. Everton were already Champions of the Second Division and rightful earned their place back in the premier football league, they were linked with Arsenal as being the two outstanding sides of the season.

One of their attractions was their “crack” leader Dixie Dean but he had sustained an injury in Everton’s game against Southampton on the Saturday and was unable to play. Not one to let his public down he appeared as a linesman to the delight of the crowd. The understanding between the Everton defence meant that there was no need for hefty kicking they knew where their comrades were and found them with ease. Yet Southend scored in the opening moments when after the bar had been hit, Jimmy Shankly fired home, a goal which clearly shocked Everton but not for long. They retaliated by hitting the post, had a shot cleared off the line, while Southend went close with two difficult chances. Inevitably Everton took over and four goals were put past Billy Moore despite his acrobatic attempts to stop them.

It wasn’t all one way traffic and Shankly headed in from a corner to make it 2-4 but two more goals gave a final score of 2-6 to the men from Lancashire, although this score exaggerated their superiority. It was an exciting, interesting and instructive game which all who saw enjoyed and hearty thanks were given to Everton for coming.

PARIS TRIP OFF
Negotiations have fallen through for the projected trip of Southend United to Paris on Thursday next. Apparently the Blues were one of several clubs approached and the French club are now to receive an Austrian touring side. The invitation to Southend to visit Germany at the end of the season is still a matter of negotiations

VISIT TO HOLLAND

Southend United received on Friday an invitation to visit Holland next Wednesday to play a Dutch representative team at Rotterdam. The offer was accepted and the United will leave on Tuesday
travelling by road to Harwich thence to Flushing. The match will be played under flood lighting conditions and Mr. David Jack has promised the Dutch authorities that he will play.

Wednesday 18th January 1937 Dutch XI 2-3 Southend United

Southend expected this game in Rotterdam to be under flood lighting conditions as had been the previous years match at Haarlem but the match was played in the afternoon with bright sunshine in front of 10,000 spectators. The Dutch had only lost to the full England side 0-1 and five of that team was playing in this match and the game created a lot of interest as it was considered a trial for their forthcoming game with Germany. Early in the game a Dutch player was injured, but as is the custom on the continent a reserve player replaced him to bring the team up to full strength. The homesters were two goals up at half time but Southend played up strongly and netted no fewer than five times although two, netted by Bushby and Jack, were disallowed. With twenty minutes to go Jack scored with a hard low drive, and ten minutes later Lane equalised and almost straight from the kick off Bolan scored the winner.
Team: Bryan; Nelson & Everett; Harris, Turner & Wright; Bolan, Jack, Bushby, Deacon & Lane

TRIP TO RUSSIA
Mr. C.N. Newitt the chairman of Southend United F.C. has been approached about the possibility of Southend United making a trip to the Soviet Union in the close season. Chelsea, West Ham and Aberdeen have also been sounded out. Chelsea and Aberdeen are keen to go and we understand that Southend are definitely interested. Soviet Russia has never previously been visited by a League side and the game there is exceedingly popular crowds of 50,000 at the big matches are quite common. The United victory in Holland against the unofficial Dutch XI on Wednesday week will have advanced their claims as the Dutch side had only been defeated once in the previous two years and that by England by a single goal. The United have also had an invitation to tour Germany at the end of the season but it is hardly likely that both countries will be visited. If they were to be the first team to tour Russia they would be in a way ambassadors of English Soccer.

TRIP TO FRANCE

On Tuesday the United received an invitation to play at La Havre on Sunday and this was accepted provided that the consent of the F.A. and arrangements for the trip could be made in time. One of the conditions is that Mr. David Jack shall turn out for Southend. From the Southend Standard 18th February 1937.

CONTEMPLATED TRIPS
The projected trip to Le Havre which was postponed from last week-end may take place at the end of the month or early in April. The club was asked to supply dates on which they were willing to play and that has been done. As the F.A. have banned any tours of league clubs to Russia at the end of the season the United have been interested on offers of trips to Germany or Ireland.
From the Southend Standard 4th March 1937

TOURS ABANDONED

Arrangements have been abandoned in respect of the projected tours of the United in Germany and Ireland at the end of the season. The hitches occurred in both instances over the question of finance.
From the Southend Standard 8th April 1937.

The United this week received the offer of three matches in Algiers and Oran (both Cities in Algeria) in early May but it has not been accepted, neither is anything further being done as to the suggested trip to Morocco for Whitsun weekend.
From the Southend Standard 22nd April 1937

We got very close to playing the Libyan National team in 1998 , Travel arrangements and accommodation were finalised and expenses were agreed to be paid , All fell though as SUFC wanted payment as well as expenses and the Libyans felt that would be difficult due the sanctions.

Middleborough went out there two years later
