Drink driving - sackable offence

Ron Manager

formerly Libertine
Interesting to hear your opinions on this. It's just been announced that Brisbane Roar coach Frank Farina (ex- Socceroos boss too, was in charge of them when they beat England at Upton Park) has been sacked after being charged with drink driving, his second such offence in two years.

From my point of view I couldn't see how the club could take any other action. Frank on the other hand has come out fighting in a press conference and said he's been made a scapegoat and they should have considered a fine or suspension. On the Roar forums opinion is pretty divided.

So, discuss - being done for drink driving, sackable offence or not?

It it affects the job sack him. If not it shouldn't make any difference to his employers

Flaming Mongreal !!!!

As above if it doesnt effect your work then so what. He is a poor role model and should be seeking help but it dosent make him a bad boss.

Absolutely justified.

Drink driving isn't merely a bit naughty, it's taking unacceptable risks with the lives of innocents. As MK siad, you don't have to look too hard to find a wealth of evidence to back that up.

Football clubs generally seek to present an image of benefitting the local community as a whole and of their employees setting a positive example. I don't see how keeping an employee who engages in that kind of behaviour can possibly be compatible.

The thing is, technically you could be having a post drink nap in your car and be done for drunk in charge, that's an unfortunate thing, but to lose your job over that as well would be awful.

As long as what you do in your spare time doesn't bring the company into disrepute you can go and do whatever the hell you want as far as I care.

Just looked it up and you only get repremanded by GTC for drink driving as a teacher.... (not that I am planning on it?!)

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/educatio...832979/Teachers-told-behave-or-face-sack.html - - I'm sure many of you have heard of the new Code of Conduct for teachers? It basically means you are always seen as a teacher even on the p*ss on a Saturday night and your behaviour could have repocussions!

Im actually really surprised that a union or group havnt got together and said this is a breach of your humans rights , they are dictating a level of conduct that i suspect hasnt been agreed on by the employees ?

There has been some mumours but not enough outcry really... I'm very against it! For example the photo of me in the crowd at the Chelsea game that appeared in Echo could of been seen as against this new code of conduct. It could have looked like I was being a football yobo and taken out of context and a parent could say that they didn't think it appropriate as a teacher (They had probablly seen Green Street! ;)). It is b*llocks, but this is the danger such a code brings in.

With drink driving, it is a horrific offense, but if it doesn't bring company into disripute, I think it is hard to sack someone too. But then equally if you are looking to get a job, it would be a stumbling block surely to have on your record?

DD its basiclly a criminal record so thast normally why people are sacked for that , but yeah your condcut thing thats going to far , has it event been created by long term experinced teachers or ex retired ones or the usula think tank experts that worked for a multinational ?

I'm wondering what's happened to the Unions too - especially as one or two of the kids from my school have now cropped up on a couple of SUFC awaydays. Could definately have repercussions (Andy, what's happened to your spelling?!) - and might potentially mean having to moderate behaviour/language/volume so as not to appear to be under the influence - could be trickly!

Erm, glasses and glasshouses and all that!

Do you know, I always have trouble with that word - I can never remember if it's an i or an a! And sometimes when I DO check it seems to be either, it's not an Americanised version is it?

From a PR perspective, it's an absolute minefield...

If they sack him, then there will obviously be a back lash by those who will sympathise with him. It's absolutely right that his personal life should have no bearing on his professional life, and as long as he keeps the two seperate then he should be fine.

If they don't sack him, Professional Clubs have an obligation to appear morally correct and to employ someone with such a heinous charge could appear morally corrupt. On top of that, whether he likes it or not, a career in such a limelight as a Football Manager will make him a role model for some and he should act as such.

It's a lose/lose situation for the club in question.
