Doncaster style?

Tangled up in Blue

Certified Senior Citizen⭐🦐
What's all this about us playing in Doncaster's style next season?
Paul Brush refers to it in his BW interview on the OS.
Apart from Maher getting the chop(which we knew about already)what difference is this likely to make to our playing style?
We know that Mac and Bailey are more direct than Maher, like to put their foot in and in Mac's case can't play a long ball out to the wing to one of our players(on a regular basis).
Other than this what's new or likely to change?
Bad news about Gower BTW.I've got a feeling from PB's comments that he'll be off to Swansea.
Some of our supporters will only be able to appreciate what a fine player MG is(on his day)when's he's not out there on the wing(or in midfield)for us.

Agree about Gower BB. But i think in my heart of hearts it might just be time for him move on, for both parties. He's a fine player and we will miss him but i think his fine days are becoming fewer and further between and he's starting to get some stick from the support.

We have very few players who could possibly play at a higher level. Gower is one of them.

Mick,
I agree.I also think we may have slipped up by not offering Kevin Maher a new one year deal at least. It's obvious that Macca will have to sit out a few games next season through suspension and there must be at least a chance that Bailey will be off to a Championship club at some point in the summer. If that happens we're going to be short in midfield even if Moussa fulfils his promise.Even Paul Brush admitted in the BW interview on the OS that Kevin Maher was our outstanding player two seasons ago.Without him and Mark Gower we will lack quality in midfield.

i didnt see either of the Donny games---what do they do differenly? and why are we adopting thier style as opposed to say Swansea?

Well the thing is- in an effort to get promoted both Doncaster and Swansea adopted the Southend style that saw us go up as champions in 2005/06. The fact that we are now attempting to mimic Doncaster's model, which is effectively a copy of our own authentic style shows you just how postmodern league one football has become.

Who or what is Zoltan Liptak in the desert of the real?

so, basically..go back to basics, forget the supposed plan B? Just get better players?

SS,
FWIW I saw both of the Donny games on Sky.At Roots Hall they were VERY competitive, almost always getting to the ball first in midfield(and most other areas of the pitch too). There was one foul on Macca by their midfield enforcer(can't remember his name)which got a yellow but deserved a red IMHO.They passed the ball around well but seemed prepared to sit back rather than take the game to us.
At Donny they got the ball out to both wings at the earliest possible opportunity and whipped the ball in as soon as they could.Classic AOMO -Charles Hughes stuff. It was very effective power play throughout.
I still wonder though if Walker had scored from that early chance whether it wouldn't have been a very different game.

this effing thread wouldn't even exist if super tawtface Halsey hadn't gifted the game to Doncaster Rovers -

nothing personal but all this Donny are great stuff is bollox -

Sorry but I don't think we were watching the same game. Yes, the ref was total and utter cack but we were completely and utterly outclassed. How much that was down to Donny being vastly superior to us I'm not so sure, but they completely dominated the midfield and we also had a very, very off day.

totally agree. i felt donny held the ball up better and were just generally the better team at both games, especially at donny we had a very off day.

I don't dispute the fact that Donny were superior to us in both games, but we were most definitely not helped by Halsey. The dvd of the 2nd leg shows how poor and how costly some of his decisions were for us, and how the timing of them effectively helped Donny on to a far better result than was really deserved.

That's true but saying that, it was also unfortunate that Walker couldn't put his chance away immediately prior to Doncaster's first goal. To be honest, we had more than our fair share of chances throughout the two legs and I always felt we could have done with a 1 or 2 goal cushion from the home leg. That didn't happen but you make your own luck over 180 minutes of football.

well given a two goal start after 20 mins me and my mates would probabley start looking good -

if James had put it away it would have been a different game .....

blah blah blah - got that sickening feeling .....

I have to confess until I saw a dvd of the 2nd leg, I didn't realise how much Hasley favoured Rovers, but did these effect the outcome of the game, I don't think they did. Most of his dubious decisions were giving goal kicks when they should have been corners for Southend.

Ok, lets just sign all of DRFC!!...job done,
We are SOUTHEND. we should be building a team that people want to copy, not us trying to copy others.
Easier said than done, and maybe we wont win anything (see West Ham and Crewe), but lets get a style of playing and stick to it. (with a plan b, c, d etc)

We going to need some new players.. at this rate it looks like we will be playing with half a squad!! Macca wont play every game and Bailey may be off so back up will be required. We only have one full back to push on and one winger who could cut in (Gower) but he might be off too
