Question Do you ever wonder if Ron Martin is just "using" Tilly ?

CC51DAS

President
So once again Tilly has had to sell his best player and trawl the bargain basement to find a replacement. Tilly is to be commended for his loyalty -only time will tell if he has pulled another rabbit out of the hat or snapped up another Revell, Betsy or Foran.

But just say that Uncle Ron delivers on his promise for the new stadium and the team after 6 months is struggling.

Do you think he would stay loyal to Tilly or would he simply ditch him and go for someone with a recognised track record at Championship level or higher ?

Foran came with quite a reputation, Betsy was a part of a successful Bristol City team, so it just didn't work out for them, he wasn't to know that.

Football is about success, not sentiment, should there be a proven manager knocking about and Tilly's not doing it then why not? We may all feel that Tilly (quite rightly) is god, but fan's opinion won't bring money in, results and an increased attendance do.

So to sum up, yes Ron is using Tilly, he's his boss, it's what bosses will do in any job!

I think TIlly we will stay on when we move to FF. He has earnt the right to in my opinion, but the pressure will be on to deliver success there.

I think RM would get a shock if he 'Ditched' Tilly, as whoever the next manager was, his first question would be "What budget have I got"

Warning: May contain an opinion:

Ron Martin could have easily replaced Tilly in our Championship season. Many people on here wanted just that. And half way through the next season. And half way through the the one after that, for that matter.

Whatever else you can say about Ron Martin, you can't knock his loyalty towards the current management.

Only because he can't get any better! Who would come here other than a player-manager type in his first job or a nobody. You won't get the likes of the promising band of managers e.g. Bothroyd, Ferguscum etc

That's life on the Managerial Merry-go-round. It's exactly why I don't see why anyone on here would ever want to go back to the days when the manager's office at Roots Hall had a revolving door, used by either career failures or chancers trying to get to a bigger Club. You use Bothroyd as an example... what do you think he'll do the second an Ipswich, or a QPR, or a Sheffield United come in for him? He'll walk.

1. We are Southend United a mid sized League One side, we have to get bargains.

2. Yes Tilson should be commended for his loyalty through this difficult time, and I guess the fact that after a 17 match run in the CCC without a win being told by Ron Martin he was still the future of the club and offered a new contract more money he appreciates the loyalty shown to him.

And if Tilly walks we're finished.

Both excellent points. Things were going a bit better for us then and although I know the economy as a whole is less favourable, it seems to me that Tilly's task is becoming harder and harder and it must be very difficult to stomach seeing your best players move on.

Equally, who is to say that RM will still remain in charge by the time the stadium is up and running. He has himself said that this is his ambition but if running a football club becomes too tricky he might just decide to stick to his day job of property development and management.
