I thought that the jury was out on Nick Hayes

Is he aon a 2 year deal?
I think we are all guilty sometimes of treating the GK position differently to other positions. With other positions we are more inclined to give players time to learn their trade, we're not so forgiving with goal keepers.

Hayes is still young though, as is Collin. They are still learning their trade. It's always easy to look at the negatives with goal keepers because their mistakes are often seen as the most costly. He made a fantastic save in the final along with many other saves since he's played for us. I'm not saying he's the nailed on number 1, but I don't think he's absolutely useless like some posters have suggested. He may yet turn out to be a very good goal keeper with the proper coaching.

I'd still have Collin as number 1 though.

Hayes is 26 - not so sure id class that as a young keeper - his problem is experience.

Collin is 21 and played more games.

Get where you are coming from, my view is that
we’ve got two relatively young lads battling it out for the No.1 shirt, and fair play, both have shown real potential but both having differing questions to answer in respect of their all round keeping abilities.
Historically, goalkeepers tend to hit their prime between 28 and 35 years old. It’s a position where experience really matters, not just shot-stopping, but organising the back line, dealing with pressure, and making the right decisions in key moments. You usually only get that calm authority from years between the sticks.
Experienced keepers can gave the defence confidence and consistency.
Bringing in the right older, more experienced keeper could be a shrewd move.
A calm head who’s been there and done it, someone to guide, challenge, and raise standards in a key position.
It boils down to either staying with and backing younger developing keepers or bring in a savvy, experienced keeper which I believe would underpin the squad as promotion contenders.

Collin has been behind our defence when it has been at its most frugal and in terms of clean sheets is one of the very best performers in the clubs history. Not sure whether we are believing in data or not believing in data, but Collin is a very good keeper at this level and experienced in terms of games played.

81 games conceding 82 goals including 35 clean sheets. Data.

Absolutely agree that Collin has been performed for us with some great shot stopping a major contribution to the clean sheet record, clearly proven he can do the job at this level. No question he’s got the talent and potential to go even further.
My point wasn’t to take anything away from what he’s achieved so far, but more that his development (and Hayes’s too, for that matter) could really benefit from the presence of a more experienced keeper in the squad – someone who’s been there, done it, and can offer that bit of guidance, competition, and support on the training ground, supporting the work of the GK coach too.
I just feel having that experience hierarchy in the keeping department would strengthen the squad overall and help both Collin and Hayes continue to develop.
I am really advocating the presence of a 3rd keeper which I know is viewed as somewhat of a luxury but over recent seasons in the NL a number of the promoted or play off finishing sides have had 3 keepers, obviously helps if you have a set up with regular reserve fixtures but I really do believe there are benefits to be had.
Anyway realise we are off topic so apologies but just wanted to get across I do rate Collin.

We have an international keeper as goalkeeping coach? I don’t think any experienced second keeper at NL level would bring more than that?

And btw he was on the bench more than once last season.

I suppose it's how you view Jaakkola's career.
A serial No.2 who racked up a career total of 185 appearances of which 40 plus were for Bristol Rovers, so yes played at a decent level and also recorded 3 full international appearances during a 10 year period.
I just feel there would be benefits to the dynamics of the squad by having a keeper with more competitive games to their name and still an active player as opposed to a GK coach who can be used as emergency bench cover.
But as it has been said many times football is all about opinions.
