“A Disciplinary Commission has ruled that Bury are to be deducted three points for fielding an ineligible player, Callum Styles, in the Sky Bet League 1 fixture against Southend United on Sunday 8 May 2016.

“The Club has accepted that Styles was not registered in accordance with League regulations and the points deduction will be applied retrospectively to Bury’s 2015/16 season total. The final divisional table for League 1 will be adjusted with Bury dropping from 14th to 16th place.”

Clubs response to Callum Styles statement…

Callum Styles arrived at Bury FC at the beginning of March and signed ‘trialists’ papers with the club. Following a successful trial spell with the club, Callum signed as an academy player.

However, the transfer deadline to register players with the Football League for the run into the end of the season was 24th March. Bury FC went into the game with Southend United on 8 May believing that Callum was a registered Bury FC player and admit all charges set down on the club and accept the punishment of a thee points deduction as Callum completed his registration forms with the club after the deadline date of 24th March.

Callum Styles is registered with Bury Football Club and has joined the Youth Team Scholarship programme for the next two seasons.

lUCKY THEY DIDN'T FINISH A POINT ABOVE THE RELEGATION POSITION

Oh caps lock.

Interesting ..... that puts us back above Bury in the league table.

I presume the result of the game still stands ........... so I think the answer is that we do not get any additional points.

Got to be the most pointless points deduction ever.

they really only ever get points deductions when it is pointless and has no effect.

But can can you imagine, if it did.... Ie... A club got relegated or promoted and then the decision reversed!!... Fans would either be praising the gods or jumping off bridges!!

Thats my understanding of the rules also. They just lose the 3 points, it's not the case of bury losing 3 points and We also gain 3 points. Not that it would have made any difference as we would have finished on 62 points and posh still finished with 63 points. So we wouldn't have climbed any higher than 14th anyway.

I disagree.

a) The rules are the rules and they should be seen to be followed. Should this happen on another occasion and there was a significant change to a club's position as a result, the Football League will be able to hand out a similar points deduction and hold their position on the basis that there is a clear precedent. No need for barristers and legal action and all that sort of nonsense.

b) I believe that Bury will receive less money now as they finished lower in the league (and it follows that we might get a little more).

agreed, although not large amounts of money prize money is given.... i believe Ron has already booked and extra session at the salon to celebrate

All that ranting and raving from Brown that cost him a fine and a touch line ban has become even more pointless - it wasn't the lino cheating but Bury and we've finished above them after all which was his main gripe!
