Do we create enough chances?

Everyone seems to be saying we need another striker, now I not saying this wrong but I see one of the problems being our lack of creativity, jcr never sets up any goals, maher a defensive player, Macca can be creative on occasion thus leaving gower as our most creative player IMO and if he not on song we buggered, apart from Hoopers one on one he fluffed against orient how many clear cut chances have we created for our strikers to actually score from, If our current strikers had been fluffing chance after chance then I would fully support the notion we need a 20 goal striker if our current batch were missing chance after chance, I think we were too spoilt with freddy as he was so good he didnt need decent service most of the time, The defence is a concern too but if you dont score you dont win, I seriously think the build up play needs to improve a lot, you could have michael owen in the team but if he isnt given the ball in the right areas he not gonna score.

Scored a good goal at leeds that looked well worked to be fair, we created some decent chances against Cheltenham, could and should have scored more, but yes i get your point leeblue. I don't think we're particularly creative, especially in midfield, and i can't recall us missing to many clear cut chances, but we have had some, i don't think scoring goals will be the problem this season.

When we eventually beat Cheltenham in the cup the match stats by the end read Crosses 29, how often can we say that week in week out. Says it all, feed the donkeys and they will score.

We don't create enough chances and it was a major problem last season when our two main plans for scoring were:

a) giving the ball to Freddy Eastwood 35 yards out and crossing our fingers

b) smashing it at the goal from 25 yards and crossing our fingers.

c) watching Adam Barrett pick up the ball, run the length of the pitch, attempt a shot / get tackled. Sometimes (eg. twice I believe) this worked, but often instead we watched Adam Barrett run back very very fast...

I assume you mean 'very very fast (by Adam Barrett's standards)'

I think this is a general complaint with most teams though barring the top 2 in the Premiership. When you look at the MOTD stats, half the time a team won't manage more than 10 attempts on goal all game, with 4 or 5 of those going some way off target.

I agree we do need to create more chances as the type of striker we now have isn't likely to pop up with as many wonder-goals as Freddy did; but its something I imagine most teams struggle with....

Play three across the middle and 1 wide, like we did in our promotion year from div 1. tilson seems to like playing 2 wingers with only 2 in the middle. I think this makes us suspect to teams who break quickly on us, and exposes an all ready weak back line. I also think Black must be given a run in the side,he seems to have a touch of class that could unlock defences.

barring the top 2 in the Premiersh
Not strictly true, Arsenal usually create millions of chances and often dont score.
Fred used to create his own chances.
JCR holds onto the ball too long. When Beckham was at Manure he always crossed early and RVN scored loads. Beckham left Ronaldo joined and RVN's goals dried up. The extra time the winger hangs onto the ball gives the defence more time to get organised.
Simple solution, drop JCR or play him up front as he has genuine pace.

Black Baily Maher/Macca Gower

Harrold/Bradbury JCR

"JCR holds onto the ball too long. When Beckham was at Manure he always crossed early and RVN scored loads."

Spot on, Steveo.

I like JCR but he does seem to think that the only place to cross a ball is down towards the Corner Flag. Black has better vision IMO and if he sees a runner then he'll diagonally cross the ball for the forward to run to. Thats what Beckham is the best at, the diagonal cross for the forward to run on to.

As mentioned earlier I wasnt at the Cheltenham game but if we did create far more chances then I must upset the Maher lovers and suggest that its because he wasnt playing. Without a doubt he can be Mr.Reliable but he always plays square. He admittedly helps move the team up the pitch by bring the defence in to play but he doesnt create direct chances for our forwards (please dont start saying thats not his job). Bailey, however, I think has a brain for that style of play and I think, given a few more opportunities, may prove to be an excellent creative signing. I'm not Maher bashing, guys, but just stating that we need a real playmaker in midfield if we are to create chances without predictably taking it down the wing and hoofing it into an empty box.
