Did we realy overachieve over the last two years??

Farmer Fossett

Youth Team⭐
I am sick of reading comments posted over the past season advising that we overachieved the majority of reach read that:

1) The first division was a particularly poor division when we won.
2) Tilson would have needed to perform miracles for us to stay in the Championship.

I strongly disagree with both points we had a very strong team in the 05/06 season, players that left the club ie Gray, Bentley and Goater were better players than the players that we brought in. Also the likes of Maher, Gowerr, Flahavan and Barrett were all better players in 2005/06 than what they are now. I do not recall reading any posts in 2005/06 advsing how poor the league was! OK this year it will be more difficult as Leeds, Doncaster, Oldham and Nottingham Forrest have all spent heavily to improve their squads but the 1st Division of 2005/06 was no worse on paper than the first division last year (with Scunthorpe, Blackpool and Bristol City gaining promotion) all big clubs???

Last season we should not have been relegated!! I personally believe that there were worse clubs in the division than Southend were Barnsley, QPR, Ipswich, Leicester and Burnley any better than us? There was a gap between the likes of top 8-10 clubs and the rest although on paper and with Eastwood we should have at least stayed in the division last year (if we did noty have such a poor start we would be a Championship club today).

I believe that part of the reason we failed was due to the tactics used by Tilson during the match ie. not knowing when to make subs or changing tactics ie formation etc when things were going against us.

Tilson has not improved as a Manager since we gained promotion to the Championship and I am concerned that we could again stuggle this year. However I for one do not believe that he should be sacked so early in the season.

Spot on with most of it mate, the only tactic you missed out was the one where the whole team would be in our penalty area defending a corner and when and if it was cleared the opposition just put it back in again!!!! great tactic that!

yeah y do we do that??? surely the more players you have on the half way line aswell the less players they can have in the box coz they are gonna have to mark ours on the half way???

i know its way too early to start worrying about relegation just yet etc. but some decision making that tilly has done so far is beginning to really concern me.

He will learn. We are all human and make mistakes. I am convinced its a team problem of confidence including the manager. Tilly is too scared to make radical choices on subs and starting line ups. The team lacks that winning formula and was so blatantly obvious in the Cheltenham game for me. I know we won AET (eventually) but the scoreline flattered our second half performance and we were lucky to even get to extra time.

Last thing we need is for the team to have abuse thrown at them. That will make what little confidence there is disappear very quickly and will set us on a slippery slope indeed.

A couple of league wins will do the team, etc the world of good I am sure.

Confidence breeds success and success breeds confidence. I know it sounds a bit w**ky, but alas its true.

very true, as stated in another thread. we have two choices. throw abuse at players and make them worse or sing and support the team. i know what i would prefer to do.
