Did we miss a trick?

Should we (and indeed would we have been allowed to) have arranged a post-match penalty shoot out with Port Vale to replicate taking penalties in front of a large crowd? I know the pressure wouldn't have been anywhere near the same, but I'm sure Vale would have said yes to such an opportunity.

As penalties in the semis would only take place at Doncaster, we could have all booed when Southend were taking penalties. It would have been a bit like earlier this season when we were getting booed at home anyway!!!!

How does the ref come to the decision which end to take the pens after extra time or does it depend on the state of each pen area at the end of time? As we are all going to be behind one goal at Doncaster to have them up our end would be a distinct advantage.

Flip of a coin im sure.

I think there's usually two coin tosses, unless the referee has already decided before the match which end pens will be taken from.

I'm sure that its agreed before the game, the ref consults with the police as well as each captain I believe.

They had a coin toss to decide who goes first.

If we do get to final and play Leeds and it goes to pens at least their goalie won't have had much match practice at saving them;)

Good point. When Manu had a penalty given against them against Chelsea last week it was the 1st penalty given against them all season.
Its strange how the big clubs don't seem to concede many penalties.

I always thought it was infront of the away end. Just like when we played Daggers in the JPT it was infront of them

pointless exercise practising pens at the end on saturday, you can not create the atmosphere/pressure there would be in a play off semi

Exactly, you're never gonna be on a winner here. Reasons stated above and if we lost the penalty shootout against port vale, there may not be the same confidence should we go into one in the play offs

Just to clear up the confusion, from a qualified referee, the toss of a coin in which the visiting team calls 'Heads' or 'Tails', the winner then decides which end the penalties will be held at.

Are you sure that always happens for high profile matches? Quite often the end has already been decided in advance, now I'm not sure if that always involves the toss of a coin or if the ref & police have some input as well?

Page 54 of the laws of the game, from the FIFA web site:-

  • The Referee chooses the goal at which the kicks will be taken
  • The referee tosses a coin and the team whose captain wins the toss decides whether to take the first or the second kick

I'm sure I heard Dan Finkelstein of the Times say on a podcast once that, according to statistics based on World Cup matches, there's actually a slight advantage in facing the opposition fans when taking penalties rather than your own.

Of course, whether this is true in English league football is another matter, but I was surprised to hear it.
