Darryl Update

Prodigal Son

Manager
I'm not one for rumours, but just go on facts. So, just wanted to share with you that Darryl was the presenter at the SUFC soccer school last week in Shoebury, my son is a regular on these courses. Darryl handed out the trophies and signed autographs for a long time. Mrs. F (or she soon will be) was also in attendance and their little boy, kitted out in England goalkeeper's kit.

Darryl had a bandage on his right hand, did'nt stop him signing 100+ autographs.

I thought this might be an indicator that he is going to sign a new contract, I would not expect a senior player to show up during his holiday to do this.

Today's Echo says he is mulling over a 1 year contract offer, hope that's a misprint, think he deserves two years.

Surely as his son was in an England kit and not a Southend kit means he's leaving though?

Sorry, but they've both got as much likelyhood of hinting what he's going to do and that's very little. :D

Must be the case. Obviously practicing signing his name so that he gets it nice and neat on his new contract.

Did he need a step ladder to reach the kids he was giving trophies to??

I wouldn't be too suprised if we see Flavs leave this summer, seems like it wasn't such a good idea to let Collis go so soon either!!!

Watch this space...............

Tilly obviously thinks that Collis isn't the answer for us or he wouldn't have dropped him earlier in the season having had a good look at him. Regardless of whether Flavs stays or not we need to do better than Steve Collis.

Certainly wouldn't take the soccer school thing as an indicator, I remember others who've done this just before departing.

Flav deserves the two year deal others have mentioned and the testimonial he mentioned the other week even if we do go out and sign another keeper.

Competition is never a bad thing.

I really hope Flavs stays, even if we sign Petr Cech this summer. He'd still be a great number two ahead of Clark Masters who has had very little first team experience as yet and will probably be our reserve keeper.

Offering a one year deal, IMO, is a bit of an insult to Darryl. He may not be the biggest keeper in the world, but he has fought off all claims to the number one jersey and was rightly voted best goalie in L1 two seasons ago.

Great keeper for us.. I think he will stay maybe presenting trophies instead of going on holiday is a good sign that he is here to talk to the board

I still think a replacement is needed. Maybe Bart Gremienk or Mel Capleton will come back.. who knows??
or in the other forum, Gregory Coupet is getting the ferry over :D

Agreed, I think if he'd been offered the two then he'd have taken it. There's very few players who've been so vital to a club as he has over the last few years, and no-one can question his commitment. This must feel a bit like a kick in the teeth.

Agreed, but IMO we also need to consider the longer term and look toward life after DF, if we aspire to make year on year squad improvements, make it to the promised land & secure CCC status.

The offer of a one year makes it clear that, like with many of us, there are some reservations about him with the management and whether he should continue to be our No1 for much longer. Perhaps they are also slightly frustrated at leaking far too many similar goals......

Due to the circumstances, as with Gower though, Darryl is someone that we can say thanks for service and wish him well if he does decide to leave.

I don't see how a one-year contract is a big problem for Flavs. He's a big enough name by now that he shouldn't be concerned about long-term security - in twelve months time I find it hard to believe that he'll be unemployed, and it means that if he loses his number one jersey here (which I think could/should happen) he'll be free to go elsewhere next summer.
