We might if we can get rid of more peripheral players. Are you saying you know for sure one is going then?
Nah, not privy to information like that, gut feeling only. Only other chance to keep both is if we can get rid of Paterson for money. If we can't then I'd be in favour of paying his contract up and letting him go as a free agent. I suppose there is a chance we might get Timlin for a longer loan period so we might have them both, but I fully expect offers for Kane in come January.

If you're obsessed with statistics then the only one that matters is D&R 2 SUFC 3

Quite right, there's lies, damned lies and statistics. We really seem to be catching some of the worst aspects of American sports. Seriously sitting in a stand watching player A and how many passes he's completed or not.

The main stat is we won, and as Ken points out we are still top of the league. We are on a long unbeaten run so we must be doing something right, and long may that continue.

Again someone totally missing my point. So I will make it again
Ita a match thread, its about people stating their opinion on how we played. If everytime someone says we played badly gets slagged off by someone saying 'we won- thats all that matters' whats the point of a match thread?

We all know we won, we all know the winning streak is brillant, we are all over the moon with this run, we are all happy that we can play badly and still win etc etc etc---- but none of this is relevant to a thread which is supposed to be about how well we played

I dont see why this is so hard to understand

ps Obsessed??????? First time I have ever quoted match stats, hardly 'obsessive'

First D&R goal - they seemed to have time to read the paper before the finish.
Second - we backed off, backed off, ba - oh.
Daniels made 2 great saves - worrying really.

Worrying really, 12 wins from 14 games - you're right something needs to be done.

Mohnsi. 7. set up Dicko's goal with a good pass. Spent a lot of time on the floor, injured his own keeper. Got booked for over celebration ( I think) tried to be a bit too intricate at times especially in the corners, and gave it away, when the simple ball was on. Typical Mohnsi game.
Mohnsi was priceless and worth the admission money on his own. Had to laugh when half way through the first half when he and Hall switched wings, such was his enthusiasm, that after another few minutes, he seemed to forget where he was playing and almost had to be physically pushed out wide by Ferdinand. Was a little afraid that after our first goal the demons had returned and he was about to seriously loose it with the referee who needlessly booked him for over celebrating, but fortunately he was calmed down by Hall I think, and order was restored. Moments of brilliance with his passing and control followed by his comical stepping on the ball in full flight and attempts at keeping the ball by the corner flag at the end. I love the blokes fight and commitment and he clearly has a great repoire with the fans and you know that whatever you may get from the guy he will always give 100% and always looks for the ball.... whatever part of the pitch it may be.

In all seriousness, we weren't great defensively, but as we saw yesterday, we weren't great. As we see when Hall does it, players with pace running at you isn't a lot of fun & difficult to deal with. There should be somebody to approach the attacker & not have everybody back off.

An off day after so many good defensive performances, these things happen. Onwards & upwards!

I have a real problem with Kalala, Ferdinand and Timlin playing together in the middle. It always seems that one of them shines but the other two struggle, yesterday I thought Kalala was the one to suffer most and that Timlin's creativity was stifled by him continuously having to help out in defence. Ferdinand had one of the best games of his season so far, and hopefully that will have impressed the West Ham bods who were probably there keeping an eye on their own boy.

It's OK, Grant's back from suspension after Tuesday and can take Kalala's place.

Agreed the bloke is absolutely mental, but great to watch!

Kalala gives the shaky defence extra support, I can't see Grant doing that role, I can't see where Grant fits in at the moment except for being a 30 minute sub

Grant was originally a defensive midfielder. He's more than capable of playing that role.

In the five matches Kalala hasn't played since Timlin came into the side we've only conceded the one goal. We conceded more than that yesterday with Kalala supposedly providing defensive cover.

Way I saw the game was that no one was particularly great or poor, tho' that said Phillips, Ferdinand and Daniels stick in my mind.Had a chat with Kane's Grandma and Dad before the game. She told me in her true Irish lilt it was her first ever game; Dad said he would like to see him see out this season and that there was interest from W Ham P.Boro & Forest....Only other comment I have is about the home support on the Victoria terrace where I had to stand,; about the most foul mouthed nasty chavs I have seen in some time

I have had time to digest a lot of what has been said on here and there seems to be a lot of confusion over what is important the win and three points or performance. Well arguably both are important as a collective, but at the end of the day the three points are what is recorded. No team can play lovely free flowing football, even those at the top will struggle from time to time thats the nature of football. as a comparison watch the highlights of man city v qpr a few weeks back. do you think man city fans care that they were lucky to win ... i don't think so. The bottom line is that the signs of a good team, a promotion team is one that wins regardless of performance. If anyone is in doubt whether we deserved to win or not, just watch the goals. they were three very different goals but each one excellent for different reasons. it is this sort of things that people should look at rather than individuals performances, would we have won that game last season, no, would we have beaten oxford, no, port vale away, no, but we won them all, because we are a good team and a consistent team, we will struggle at times and will lose sooner rather than later, but we will go up im certain of that. Keep the faith, keep supporting. UTB

A Daggers fan on Twitter has asked me to post this link to his match report. http://thedaggersscale.blogspot.com/2011/11/daggers-2-3-southend-united.html

That my readers; is the mark of league leaders. Being able to ride out pressure and then go up the other end against the run of play and retake the lead.

See? Other teams' supporters recognise this, why don't we? A good read, just one thing.......we're the SHRIMPERS not bloody Shrimps!

A hard fought win, that was more difficult than anticipated. However, never felt we was going to not get the three points, we always had enough in reserve to step up a gear and get another goal when we needed to. We started well, their equalizer took the wind out of sails for a while and prevented a more one sided game than expected. I think Dagenham will be OK if they play with as much heart every week.

Daniels 6.5 - At fault for 1st goal and kicking wayward, redeemed himself with good saves in the second half
Clohessey 7 - Usual industrious display we come to expect
Barker 6.5 - A bit shaky and unusually hesitant, backed off a lot
Phillips 7 - Better of the centre halves, kept busy by Montano who was a handful
Gilbert 7 - Had a steady game, no errors of note
Ferdinand 7.5 - Well taken goals, just wish for me to get more involved, flits in and out
Kalala 7 - Better than last week still needed Timlin to help out a bit at the back, maybe that was down to the opposition
Timlin 8 - MOTM, cleared up a lot at the back and would be my captain if we sign him permanently
Mohsni 7 - Moments of brilliance mixed with madness, typical performance
Dickinson 7.5 - Had an awful lot of work to do, on his own for a lot of the time
Hall 7 - Always threatens, had less of the ball than usual.

A win playing within ourselves against an improved Daggers in a keenly contested derby match. That will do for me, we are getting used to this 4-5-1 away from home because it works. Expect Harris to be back to partner Dicko for the home games coming up in a home formation of 4-4-2. Difficult to see who to leave out though as the midfield players all bring their own qualities. Nice quandary for PS to have.

Agree here. It is a match report thread, where people give their opinions about the performance. If people say they were unimpressed by the performance then this is the place to do it. The 'we won 3-2 that's all that matters' replies to those opinions do grate a little......if people just want to concentrate on the fact that we won 3-2, then they should start a thread entitled 'Scoreline Discussion'.

I do agree that we were fairly poor. When we got the ball on the deck they couldn't touch us but we only did that for the build-up to the goals. Elsewhere, we allowed ourselves to get sucked into their style of play. At the stage in the second half where Daggers were on top, we started playing hot potato. The opposition can't do anything without the ball, so why keep on endlessly relinquishing possession to them so cheaply? When we're on the attack, I can see why we play the direct ball into the channels. It works. But when we're on the back foot, there are just far too many players aimlessly swinging a foot at the ball and the thing goes straight back to the opposition. For God's sake, get the ball down, play the short simple pass and retain possession! We might not be going forward very quickly but at least we have the ball - that's the intelligent way to stop the other team from playing!

We are lucky that we have a very good collection of individuals for this level. That is what allows us to play poorly and still win. Yes we could say it's the sign of a good team, one who can win without playing well, but it's happening so often at the moment that there will come a time when it stops being the sign of a good team and starts being put down to sheer blind luck. If we keep playing like that, we WILL get found out soon enough, make no mistake about it. I agree with everyone who says that we should just get out of this division 'at any cost', but I think we are too good a side to do that. We shouldn't need to 'win at any cost' because there is enough quality in the team to take other teams apart. Football is at least partly about entertainment and spectacle and it just frustrates me a little that we are CLEARLY capable of really taking some of the teams in this division to town and running up a cricket score, but we are still yet to do so. I want us to make a real statement of intent and just absolutely smash the living **** out of someone.

W13 D2 L3 - that's not blind luck, we're at the top because we're a good side and deserve to be there.
