The game IMO was awful to watch and once again we rode our luck. The three goals we scored were I think the only times we played it on the floor..Hoofball was the once again the choice of today..To many players had an off day and the defence looked as shaky as I have seen it all season.

I was saying to Smiffy on the way out, how come we have another 3 points in the bag but it feels like we have lost. Maybe it's me expecting to much from the team now we have been on such a run but the truth is we haven't played that well in any game this season that I have seen and it still baffles me at times as to how we are top of the league.

Still I will take the points and lets hope this run continues.

Daggers are happy are we.

Reading Daggers forum and they seem delighted with there performance and believe they were much improved than of late. We have won 3-2 and seem much less delighted with our play , which would seem rather strange. Well may be not. I just think that we not only want to be top of the league but play football that shows we are better class and deserve to be there. I think we were fortunate to get all 3 points in the end as Dagenham came out the second half and looked the better team. P.S. said exactly that after the game. Also he said that its great to win when you have not played well but you dont want to keep having to do it. I thought when we got the ball down and used it well we looked like scoring but we just did not get it down on the ground very often.Fantastic save near the end which looked in for sure then got up and helped to block the ball for the follow up shot. Good atmosphere and really enjoyed the game all be it a bit nail biting near the end. Lets face it, if some one offered us this situation at start of the season we would say 'YES PLEASE' !! So all in all very happy and hope we turn on the class v Preston. PS says a lot of changes for Tuesday. How important is a cup run??

....good job that we were playing a pub team. Yes we keep winning, thunderbolts from Hall, far post headers from Phillips but today was just embarrassing. Winning mentality at the moment but when that ends can see us on the slide. Another plus of course is that the rest are pretty useless but can't help feel that stealing games just can't go on especially if a couple of key players go. We shall see, hope i'm wrong!

Didn't see too many of the 1500 away fans sheepishly and apologetically leave the stadium tbh. Touch fortunate, yes...embarrassing, nope.

The three points were great but we played poorly again...really proves the standard of this league. As someone mentioned, the looked creaky again and Timlin was right to have a go at Barker and Phillips after their second... And he made his point for a good 2-3 minutes and in no uncertain terms.

Again not sure why Sturrock didn't throw on more subs...it clearly wasn't working and I thought we had a bench this season that we could turn to if required... we seem to have a 12 at the moment (including Leonard)...thought the industry of Sawyer and the pace of Johnson at the end of games as teams tire would be useful.

Preston lost again... Would love to see us take it too them on Tuesday... I hope we don't sit back...interesting to see what team we put out

So frustrating today. Again we did just enough to sneak a win without getting out of 2nd gear. We could have taken this oh so poor daggers team completely apart today if only we kept it on the deck and just passed our way around them the way we did for our three goals and the last five minutes when we were running out time and playing keep ball and actually looking good. Hate to criticize especially as its another three points and we are going into Christmas still very much in three competitions .

Some of the comments on here make me laugh. Maybe we didnt play as well as we could but we won which is all that matters. Its a sign of a good team when they still win without playing well.

Exactly, it's all about grinding out results when not playing well, sign of good team. Just nine points from safety, and then everything else is a bonus ;)

Mohsni was booked for going over the barrier after we scored our first goal apparently. Not sure if he did though. Least he didn't get sent off.

another game unbeaten, another 3 points-at least this one had 5 goals, and wasn't the stroll in the park many thought before the game. But being Southend United we do things the hard way..
Daniels 8.
wonder save that looked a certain goal at the end made sure the 3 points headed home. No chance with the second goal--had goal written all over it from the moment it left Ogogo's boot. (although we backed off too much) !st goal however went through his legs I think, coudn't be sure as a long way away. Kicking a bit wayward in the second half. Took a knock from Mohnsi (Ithink) in the first half and was down for two minutes.

Clohessey 7. Had his hands full with Montano, but still managed to get forward on occassions. Don't know why he was always marking Montano though (or always seemed to be)

Barker 6.5 Shaky at times better later on in the game.

Phillips 6.5 Some moments of cool head followed by some moments of panick.

Gilbert 7.5 My pick of the back four who I thought had one of his more solid days.

Kalala 7.5 Thought had a good start, and a good finish, but the middle bit was a bit anonymous

Timlin 7.5 Some moments of pure class, and then was shut down very quickly by Daggers, who obviously identified him as one of our danger men.

Ferdinand 8. MoM two goals from midfield, and a very tidy performance, breaking up, defending, and hunting down. Just edged the midfield.

Mohnsi. 7. set up Dicko's goal with a good pass. Spent a lot of time on the floor, injured his own keeper. Got booked for over celebration ( I think) tried to be a bit too intricate at times especially in the corners, and gave it away, when the simple ball was on. Typical Mohnsi game.

Hall 7.5 lovely assist with the first goal, great cross very difficult to defend. Also some neat control on the wing(s)

Dickinson 7.5 I thought his goal was well constructed and a good move. His overall contribution was good too, and was a handful for their defence.

Spoke to one of their fans as we were leaving the ground, and he said that was the best they had played all season. I said Montano was a real handful, and gave us something to think about, and that the game wasn't a gimmee. If they can keep hold of Montano for a few months they should start to climb the league on that performance. Certainly not the worst team we have played this season, and were not afraid to have a go at us.

One poses the question , that if we had Grant or Leonard available today, would we have seen a substitution?

Grant was in the stand behind me! Had to disappear at half time to move his car though after the announcer said there was an issue with a BMW.

Thought the standard of football I saw today was the worst I have seen for many years, and there is more passing football in the Essex Senior League.

Dagenham are poor, but will get results from their route one/pressing/100 mile an hour football.

We put the ball on the deck about 5 times in the match, which created the 3 "Arsenal-esque" goals and a couple of other half chances. The rest of the time, we played Daggers hoofball, but they were better at it than us.

Was impressed with their West Ham loan signing.

Lets face it, this game was a potential banana skin and we (just) came through it with another 3 points. We have now won 5 consecutive away league games on the trot. When was the last time we said that? We are top of the league and you don't end up there by mistake so we must be doing something right. We let in a couple of bad goals and I thought Dickinson would have benefited from a closer partner up front.
All in all, we won even though we didn't play well, ColEwe lost 5-1 at home and despite the Creepies winning, they are unable to peg us back, so lets enjoy the moment and look forward to the Pirates who couldn't beat Barnet at home today!
The Cup games are a bonus because we have nothing to lose with them and I feel that it is far more important that we get promoted this year and get out of this god foresaken division.
UTB.

I don't know what people are complaining about. We won away from home against a team putting in their best performance of the season. Scored 3 excellent goals. Fair enough they scored 2, but one was a 'moment' from the keeper and the other a wonder strike. I've seen us play better, but well I've seen us play much much worse too.

rubbish- the thread is a match report, we all know the score. Why should people gloss over the fact we played badly just because we won. I hate it when people say 'what would you prefer , play badly and win , or play well and loose' its totally irrelevant to a MATCH REPORT.

Forget about the score
Does anyone really think we played well for 90 mins today?

A good win, albeit slightly fortuitous. You could see we had the better team, class all over the pitch really, but we didn't create enough and defended poorly a couple of times (to be punished, twice). Ferdinand's first goal was beautiful, a fantastically weighted cross from Hall and a surging run and finish from Kane. Assuming West Ham's scouts were there (it's only down the road afterall) then I think he's done himself no harm whatsoever.

Daniels - 8 (mainly for that save late on, looked very good from the terrace)
Clohessy - 7 (solid and kept running all game)
Gilbert - 7 (looked decent, certainly wasn't a weakness in the side but as expected from a left back didn't 'wow' too much)
Barker - 7 (led really well from the back, solid performance again)
Phillips - 8 (won lots in the air, very solid defensively)
Kalala - 7 (usual game from Essien, nothing noteworthy but didn't seem to do much wrong either)
Timlin - 7 (that guy has got an engine, drives the team forward)
Ferdinand - 9 (what a great couple of runs for his goals. Top quality from the lad, his fitness is second to none and always does the simple things well)
Mohsni - 7 (won lots in the air, had a petulant moment though early in the first half. Good cross for Dicko's goal)
Hall - 7.5 (looked a class above all day but it never quite came off for him. Great reverse ball to set Clohessy in out wide and fantastically weighted pass for Ferdinand's first)
Dickinson - 7.5 (won lots in the air, more than he lost and slotted one of his two chances away. Worked hard all game)

your spot on apart from the forget the score comment, its all about the score surely

Afraid I had to make do with listening to Paul Clark on the radio but he talks so much sense. He felt that the defensive problems actually stemmed from Kane Ferdinand. More to do with the timimg of his runs forward. He left himself and his midfield team mates stranded by running forward too early and then the move breaking down. However the lad as Clarky said is only 19 and still learning and what a prospect.
