Kevin Maher says his Blues team have to put their opening-day win to one side ahead of the short trip to Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday.

We put four goals past Oldham to get off to a flying start, but the Daggers will pose a different test and one that Blues have to be ready for, believes Maher.

“We’re pleased with the performance and result last week but that was put to bed pretty quickly and we’ve got to focus on the game ahead.

“Any win breeds confidence, but nothing’s changed in terms of how we go about things. We’re not going to get carried away and we just want to follow up the level of performance and see where that takes us. You can’t have any complacency, there’s a long, long way to go.

“[Dagenham] got a decent point away from home last week and scoring late always boosts confidence as well so I think it’ll be a very tough one.”

Ben Strevens took the Daggers against Blues at Roots Hall back in April, but it’s a much-changed squad now, as Maher outlined.

“Strevs has come in, someone we know well, and he’s made a lot of changes. He’ll get them going and they’ll be at it. They’ve made a lot of good signings and I’m sure it’ll be a different game to the one at the end of last season.”

Our allocation of around 1,200 tickets was sold out four days in advance, so it’ll be a crackling atmosphere in east London.

On that, Maher said: “We always take great numbers there. It’s set up nicely but we’re focused on what we’ve got to do on the pitch. At the end of the day it’s three points and that doesn’t change whether it’s the second game of the season or the second to last game.”

The former midfielder was named Vanarama’s Manager of the Week on Tuesday, but gave all the plaudits to his squad and re-emphasised the importance of focusing on the trip to the Chigwell Construction Stadium.

“It’s credit to the players to be fair because once they go onto the pitch there’s not a lot I can do. We get the players prepared as well as we can.

“The pleasing thing was that they carried out the instructions as well as possible and the mentality they went out with, to play at the tempo and intensity that we like. Recognition’s nice but last week’s gone now.”

16 minutes of added time were played against Oldham Athletic as part of new rules that have been implemented across the English game. Maher thinks it’s an initial shock period that will die down in the coming months.

“I think the new rules will settle down after a while and we hopefully won’t get such extremes of added time and the spate of bookings.”

Blues thrashed the Latics 4-0 in the first fixture of the campaign.

But the Shrimpers have only been thinking about facing Dagenham & Redbridge this week.

“We’re pleased with the result and the performance last week but that was put to bed pretty quickly to focus on the game ahead,” said Maher.

“You can’t have complacency.

“It’s one game and there’s a long, long way to go so we won’t allow that to happen.

“We came in on Monday, reviewed the good parts and the bad from Saturday’s win and it hasn’t been mentioned since.

“It’s been all about Dagenham.”

The Daggers started their campaign with a 1-1 draw at Altrincham.

And Maher knows boss Ben Strevens will make the hosts hard to beat.

“We know Strevs well.” said Maher.

“He’s come in and made a lot of changes.

“They will be a big threat and he will get them going.

“They’ll be at it and they’ve made a lot of good signings.

“We’ve got to perform and see where it takes us.

“But it’s always a tough one against Dagenham.

“They got a decent point away from home last week and scoring late breeds confidence so it will be a very tough game.”

However, the Shrimpers will again be roared on by a large away following.

“We always take great numbers there and it makes for a great atmosphere,” said Maher.

“Both teams will be desperate for a win but we’ve got to focus on what we do on the pitch.”

Blues will again be without defender Louis Lomas this week.

“He’s had a groin problem and still managing that,” said Maher.

“He’s still a little bit away.”

Big Preview

Dagenham & Redbridge v Southend United

Big Preview.jpg

Overview

Saturday will be a great day to be a Southend United fan. Having dispatched Oldham Athletic with ease to begin the season, Blues go to Dagenham & Redbridge backed by 1,200 supporters, looking to continue their dream start.

The first away game of the campaign is also the shortest trip, just 30 miles from Roots Hall to the Chigwell Construction Stadium straight along the A13.

With another match on Tuesday against Dorking Wanderers, the next few days will be the first real test of Kevin Maher’s threadbare squad and their ability to stay fit in a 46-game schedule.

Last week’s win over Oldham was one of the most enjoyable Blues matchdays in recent years, and with a full away end set to watch the lads in the sun, Saturday could be similar.

The opposition

Dagenham finished 10th last season, six points behind Blues. It was their third consecutive top-half finish and came in spite of a mid-season managerial change.

Daryl McMahon was somewhat surprisingly dismissed in February, and was replaced by 43-year-old former striker Ben Strevens, who managed Eastleigh for more than three years.

He also played for the Daggers over two separate spells, as well as turning out for the likes of Barnet and Wycombe Wanderers.

There has been a lot of squad turnover in east London recently. From the Dagenham side that met Blues in October last year, just four of the XI remain. Dean Rance, Manny Onariase, Paul McCallum and Junior Morias are among those that have since departed.

Replacements have been bought in – central midfield trio Jake Hessenthaler, Josh Rees and Frank Vincent all signed over the summer while centre-back Tom Eastman, who made more than 400 league appearances for Colchester United, has joined on a two-year deal.

The aforementioned clash last autumn finished 1-1, while the reverse fixture ending in a 2-0 Blues victory thanks to a brace of Jack Bridge penalties.

That leaves the overall record at eight wins for Southend, four draws and six wins for Dagenham. The last EFL meeting was in the 2014/15 season, as goals from Joe Pigott, Ryan Leonard and Barry Corr sealed a 3-1 away win.

From the gaffer

Head Coach Maher emphasised the importance of putting the Oldham result to one side in Thursday’s media session.

He said: “Last week was put to bed pretty quickly and we’ve got to focus on the game ahead. Any win breeds confidence, but nothing’s changed in terms of how we go about things.

“We’re not going to get carried away and we just want to follow up the level of performance and see where that takes us. You can’t have any complacency, there’s a long, long way to go.

“We always take great numbers there. It’s set up nicely but we’re focused on what we’ve got to do on the pitch. At the end of the day it’s three points and that doesn’t change whether it’s the second game of the season or the second to last game.”

Team news

Louis Lomas (groin) remains the only absentee in Maher’s 16-man squad.

Tickets

Tickets for Blues fans sold out four days in advance! Thank you for your incredible support as ever. Please don't travel without a ticket.

Ticket holders should read our away guide for information on travel, parking and more.

Ref watch

Matthew Russell will take charge of this one. Remarkably, he refereed the same fixture in the 2022/23 season. He was also in the middle for our goalless draw at Wealdstone in August 2021.

Last season, he brandished 20 yellow cards and one red card in 13 National League games.

Russell’s assistants are Robert Evans and Thomas Cooke, and the fourth official is Gary Connell.

What’s happening elsewhere?

Aside from our meeting at the Chigwell Construction Stadium, there is also a local clash in the north-east as Hartlepool United look for their first win back in the National League against Gateshead.

Bromley against Barnet is the late kick-off, live on TNT Sports. There are no games between two sides who both won on the opening day. Chesterfield, who beat Dorking 4-3, travel to newly-promoted AFC Fylde, while 5-2 victors on opening day, Aldershot, visit Oldham.

AFC Fylde v Chesterfield
Boreham Wood v FC Halifax Town
Dorking Wanderers v Maidenhead United
Eastleigh v Wealdstone
Ebbsfleet United v Solihull Moors
Hartlepool United v Gateshead
Oldham Athletic v Aldershot Town
Oxford City v Rochdale
Woking v Altrincham
York City v Kidderminster Harriers
Bromley v Barnet (17:30)

Other than Lomas being 'a little bit away' do we know roughly how many weeks / days he's going to be out for?
