Bad idea imo, it would just lead to clubs holding back players for longer if it means the perpetrator is out for longer.

Why would it? I don't think clubs would be that petty you don't play them every week and I am sure Newcastle have the cover for Guthrie and Hull would want Fagan back asap.

Arsenal could decide to keep Bendtner out for longer as he's not as important to Arsenal as Gerrard is to Liverpool, therefore disadvantaging Liverpool as Arsenal may slow down Bendtner's recovery to disadvantage a rival team.

If he knew this was the punishment it might deter him from breaking his leg in the first place.

I think it would have to be monitored with regard to intent. The Guthrie incident was clearly intentional. Ban him for 6 months.
