Concession prices

Guest

Guest
Well, I have been getting rather p%&sed off with this concessions ticket price malarky for students so i have started investigating. I phone Southend United and asked them if we offered concession prices to away fans. She said yes and that due to FA rules we must offer Away fans the same as Home fans which i thought was a bit cheeky as the grounds we have been to so far did not do concessions. So i started phoning around to find out whats what.

Southend -

Bradford - offer concessions to Home fans, but not Away - Flouting of the rules there...
Col******r - Home and Away fans - concessions - cheaper before the game
Swindon - Need a Uni card and then cheaper on the day
Bristol City - Need a Uni card and then cheaper on the day
Tranmere - Offer a student price aged 17 - 22 only in person
Scunthorpe United - No concessions unless you join their membership scheme
Nottingham Forrest - app. they send out the student tickets to Southend, if there are any left, pay on the day - £10
Brentford - before the game only
Walsall - No Students for home or away fans
Huddersfield - You can get them on the day, from the ticket office!
Barnsly - No student concessions
Rotherham - No student prices for Away fans, but available for home fans, breaking league rules again ...
Yeovil town - full time students with an NUS card
MK dons - app concessions are available before the game
Swansea -
Oldham -
Gillingham -
Port Vale -
Blackpool -
Gillingham FC -

So as you can see there are not many teams allowing concessions, and most appear to be available to fans before the games. This has taken me ages and i am know knackered.

what do other students think about this?? And should i report my findings to the FA???

Being a student myself - A TAX PAYING ONE aswell (since i was 16) i feel that some clubs let fans down, with the student prices. Whats the point of being a student and hard up on cash if you can't get cheaper tickets. Fair enough if they don't offer it atall, but shouldnt be penalised if home fans can get it. After you pay what £20-£25 to get the the ground on the coach, then have to pay a staggering £18! on top - nearly £40-£50 for a league one game - ur having a laugh. they should be encouraging supporters to the games. Good to see though we are one of the clubs that do have a student scheme
smile.gif

Also - any students on here - do you have to pay tax on earnings whilst at uni - otherwise whats the point of a student loan?

When I was a student five years or so ago, I didn't have to pay tax on the money I earned in the summer. I do think it depends on how much you earn during the term but I'm not sure. I'll e-mail my bro who has just finished uni and had job throughout - he deals with tax codes a lot now.

Yeah i pay tax, dont think you can claim in back either. unless its under your allowance which is around £4,350

we are not complaining about Southend United!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are happy with them.

Its when we go to away games, they don't give student concessions, but do to their home fans!!!

going into my forth year as a travelling student living at home. work part time and have had to pay quite a substantial amount of tax considering the pennies i earn. it doesnt bother me too much but i do however feel there should be some kind of formal pricng system for every league. this may sound a boring way of doing things but it would make it fair. after hearing today that swindon charge £23 for away fans yet now finding i could get a ticket at forest for £10 it doesnt sound right. thre should be a standard away fan charge for all clubs. say for example £15 adults under 16's and OAPS £8 and students £10 - simple

Maybe we need an independent ticketing body. That can assess grounds and their facilities and decide on a price. It certainly is crooked as it stands currently IMO.

Yes - the post said:

Does that mean its cheapest to purchase on the day or with a Student card? What's the cheapest option therefore.

Did you read my question?

Steve I think you've been a victim of daylight robbery.

I worked for 14 months spanning two years (at uni the rest of the time) and was well over the threshold in both years. However, I was refunded £500 for one year and £300 for the other, presumably on the basis that they assume your income will remain constant through the year and tax you as such. Go to the tax office and explain that you were a full time student for most of the time and you should be in for a decent rebate.

Incidentally, all students are tax payers and heavy ones at that. Not only do we pay VAT like everyone else, most of our disposable income goes on alcohol and fags where most of the cost is duty.

Oh dear, using 'we' as though I'm still a student!!

Regarding the ticket prices, it's always been a shambles at other clubs. At Macclesfield, apparently, I was supposed to have rung up beforehand to tell them I was coming as though it would have made any difference. At Shrewsbury, I was told that they couldn't do student tickets because I was late. Again, makes no sense at all.

Only place I was impressed with was Cheltenham who dealt with it, well, like we have done.

Don't like the sounds of SUFC's supposed policy that you have to prove you're not working. Again, it makes no sense and seems to be designed to get as much money out of people by citing lack of preparation as the reason for it being the student's fault that he can prove he's a student but no more.

Presuming you just got knackered on the last 7/8??

I supose it depends how much you earnt. I stayed in Kingston last summer and worked at my job i did during term time as we had to pay rent for my house from the 1st july. I think i ended up earning around 9 grand. Should i get tax back on that??

I think you find concessions is not a law to have but a commercial way to encourage people to come along.

So teams do chose not to give concessions to away fans as they feel that in the long term they do not gain as much as having concessions for home fans, after all you have volunteered to give up your Saturday, pay money on travelling expenses so you must be a die hard and a full price ticket is not going to stop you.

Remember nobody put a gun to your head to make you go to Uni, it was all about choice as is going to football matches.

but my point is that (according to Southend United) football league rules state that whatever you give to the home fans you must also offer to away fans, and in some instances in this division is not the case, and they are breaking the rules. Why should Southend United then offer concessions to teams such as Bradford and Barnsley when they offer none to us??

I thought the point of being a student was to study, gain qualifications and better yourself. I didn't realise you only became one for cheaper footy tickets.

Seriously, I earnt well over 16000 and still got 800 tax back from about 3500 taxed.

Just go down the tax office in Southend and ask them and they'll tell you either way after filling out a record of where you've been working or not.
