Computer Help!

Right boys and girls, you'll have to bare with me because I'm not the cleverist when it comes to computers. I keep getting a warning that my anit-virus software is nearing its termination and requires updating. I'm with Norton who are qouting me about £30 to update for another year. Trouble is, I'm going to be away for a year travelling the world (yep, life really is that tough). Therefore I could really do without having to fork out 30 odd quid for something I won't use. Ive heard you can get anti-virus software as a free download but have no idea who. And finally, how the bugger do I go about doing this and transferring from one piece of software to the next.

Idiots guide required

Any help greatfully recieved in advance

If you are not going to be using your PC (and assuming nobody else will be) then don't upgrade your anti virus software.

Wait until you get back from travelling.

www.avast.com is the free download and very good too.

On a PC, control panel > add/remove programs. Remove all your Norton programs. Download Avast and install. Simple as that!

But as Mad Cyril says, you only need anti-virus software if you're connected to t'interweb.

HTH.

Thanking both for a speed reply. I won't personally be using it but theres a fair chance someone from my household will so I liked to cover myself just in case!

Thanks again

Norton just slows your computer down.

Linky
is that completely free or just a trial?

..and that's not neccessarily true. If you put any kind of media in your computer, be it CD ROM, Floppy or Flash Drive, you need a virus checker.

I work with Open VMS so I don't have to worry about that!
