My personal favourite, and by 'favourite' I actually mean the one I find the most annoying, is

'he could have had a hat-trick'

what they really mean is 'he has had 3 good opportunities to score one goal'

clearly if any of them had gone in, there would have subsequently been a completely different sequence of events.

I've got more, but am hoping my fellow pedants will unite in an attempt to exorcise these demons!!
