chicken in a basket

Lord Football

Blues on Tour
For some reason this has been the subject of much debate amongst Blues of a certain age.

Does anyone know why we used to sing
"Chicken in a basket, Super Roy
Super Roy McDonough"

The song's a legend, but no one seems to know it's origin.

Anyone know?

I remember singing it but unfortunately i dont know why, i do remember thinking it was a little strange at the time but everyone else was singing it so i joined in......

chicken in a basket super roy
chicken in a basket super roy

aaah the good old days,
the days when there wasnt thread after thread from 15 year olds, letting us know what songs they want to sing to the players
the days of the north bank........

I always thought there were 2 verses...

Cheeky little *******, Super Roy...

Then Chicken in a Basket (as it rhymed!)...

Then again, I was about 11 when McDoughnut was playing and could have imagined the whole thing!

it goes da da da da da da da da da:p

Thats the one:hilarious:

I can never remember any other words apart from 'Chicken in a basket Roy McDonough'

I think the original poster is also confusing this song with the other song which just went 'Roy, Roy, super Roy, super Roy McDonough', which was probably sung just after or before the chicken in a basket ditty so could have sounded like one song. Very interesting this thread!

Surely it was to do with his "chicken in a basket" entertainer type appearance.

As in Bob Carolgees is the kind of act you see whilst being served Chicken in a Basket.

It's an age thing. The marbles go.

If my addled and alcoholically abused memory serves me right both the "Super Roy" and "Chicken in a Basket" song were one and the same or at least inter twined.

But I am old and senile.....

Personally, I think we should re-adopt it and stop with this nonense of trying to inflict "I'm A Believer" or some other pointless ditty on us before the game.

Quite, what the hell are we meant to sing to the tune of I'm a Believer'??

Get all the fans together & stick with the traditional songs, 'Come on Southend', 'Blue Army', 'A Shrimping we must go' etc, etc, etc....

I remember the "Roy Roy Super Roy" chant being changed briefly to "Roy Roy Stamper Roy" after he wiped his feet all over a Burnley player at Turf Moor one night :hilarious: :hilarious:
