Che Wilson

Jam_Man

Life President
Surely he has to be a serious contender for player of the season this year? I thought he was one of our better players last season and this year he's upped it another notch, capped by his goal on Saturday.

I know a lot of the transfer speculation has been about Freddy and Gutts this season but I think Che is at the level now where he could walk into a Championship side.

Vote for Cheese!

I'd agree with that.

Some of the criticism he has had since he has been at the club has been totally unjustified if you ask me - all based on one bad game in the LDV final.

Well despite this, he has never let his head drop and always gives 100%. Plays with a smile on his face as well, and comes across as being a really good lad.

Arise Sir Cheese.

Agreed.

I think that the main contenders are;

Flavs,
Maher,
Gutts,
Eastwood

I've never been a fan of Che, thought he was our weakest link in the team. But he has happily proved me wrong, and has definitely held his own in that position. To stretch as far as player of year is another case. I'm not even sure Freddy is our player of the year because I can remember quite a few games when he has been ineffective. Therefore, if it was down to me to choose, I would say Flavs all the way.

Id just like to say that "Kenny" managed to log in as me and posted the original comment the b*****d!

I too was extremely critical of Che last season but he has indeed improved huge amounts this season and is no longer the liability of the team.

I dont however think he will be our player of the year and his best chance of Championship football is with us!

He is however becoming a bit of a cult figure and Im surprised theres not been any "I was there when Che'esy scored" Tshirts.

PS I suppose I should be grateful Kenny didnt post "I think Col U are better than us!"

I think Wilson has had a good season, he's one of those dependable players, doesn't do a lot wrong generally and is a decent footballer to boot, he's willing to get forward and support the man in front of him as well as being a good defender.

As for player of the season I think Flavs will get a lot of votes, he's been sensational nearly all season!

Agree with Ljubljana Branch with contenders

For my money Gutts would get player of the season. If you look at the points per game ratios of games he played in v games he didn't, there's a huge difference - about 2 v less than 1 I think.

That gets him player of the season for me, though Flavs would run him close.

I wonder how close Sodje might have come if we'd signed him at the beginning of the year - from what I've seen (2 games) he's been phenomenal.

I think that Sodje is a decent centre-half and injects some much-needed strength to the team.

However he (IMO) is too rash and is likely to cost goals through a season-worth of games to get the player of the season. I fully expect Sodje & Barrett to remain the centre-halves until the end of the season - something that I fully support.

I think people are going a little bit OTT as some of the improvement is down to the rest of the team, and Che himself, masking his deficiencies. He doesn't go forward much, which means he can concentrate on being solid at the back, and his distribution is pretty woeful.

What I like about Che is that he is the most dependable player in the squad. His performance level very rarely alters from one game to the next. He works hard, he puts his tackles in and has made the position his own. Fair play to him. But Player of the Year? No chance.

Up until a couple of weeks ago I'd have gone for Gutts, but now Eastwood would get my vote. He's got that spark about him, like Trundle does at Swansea, that give us that little bit extra chance of winning a match. Just look at the performances against Col******r & Chesterfield and contrast them to the Freddy-less performance against Walsall.

I agree.

Sodje is a good signing but I do seem to cross my fingers anytime he gets near the ball as he seems like he is going to balls it up, which may be harsh.

Did see him have one game where he didnt play well but overall like his pace and think he is

For genuine player of the season, has to be Gutteridge.

For improved player of the season, Che would be up there seeing as he was so bad last year and failry solid this year. Also Gower, since Christmas he has really started putting in consistently good performances.

Eastwood I think has had to adjust to the higher standard and I think that he too has really improved over the season and I think he is the spark we need to get promotion. If he can put in more performances like the last two then we will be fine. Need to see how well he does Friday at home against a team more defensive minded.

Che has improved beyond all recognition from the player who ran away from Bullock at the LDV vans final, after which I didn't think he would ever pull on a southend shirt again.

Couldn't believe he got a two year contract after that, which clearly indicates I know absolutely nothing about football.

Well done Che for proving me wrong, you are indeed a Southend goalscoring legend.

Totally agree GAR, I was thinking of the exact same game. I remember it was a toss-up between Wilson and Jamie Stuart, who I thought had one great game acting as centre-back towards the end of that season. At the time, I even thought it controversial that Wilson was awarded the contract over him. How time has proved me wrong...

I would add that the lad seems to have a good attitude as well.He got a bit of stick from the Barside in the second half, but took it all in his stride and had a bit of a laugh with the fans.He looked a far better more confident player than when I last saw him play, and he certainly took the mickey out of Duguid and Davidson for that third goal

1) Gutts
2) Flavs
3) Maher (But will be Eastwood).

Che has improved a considerable amount from his horror show Vs Blackpool, but I think the fact that he'd never scored before this season is going to some peoples heads. Improved player of the year no doubt but player of the year no chance.

No doubt in my mind, definitely Lukey boy.

(oh and 2000 posts up for me, congratualtions to myself, I must get a life!)
