Just waiting to get back on the coach.....nouble actually gets paid to play football....I'm Stunned.
Anyway onto the game....too many 1st team players out and mcgaughlin misses a great chance at one all.

Hindsight is obviously a wonderful thing, but before the match started, I would have played Fortune ahead of Nouble. Suprised Hines doesn't get an outing when needing a goal too. Injuries are really killing us at a penultimate time. Let's hope 5 days rest helps said injuries.

Not over yet

Utb!

I get seriously annoyed when we gift wrap victories and put a bow on it for good measure. Talk about gifting a victory. Charlton were ridiculously poor but we were just unacceptably "meh". As in, for the entire game, even with a makeshift centre midfield, we always looked like we had another couple of gears to use and really put Charlton to the sword. But nobody on the pitch seemed to want to use them. It ended up being disjointed, which is what happens when 2 or 3 players have off days.

I don't like getting beaten by other clubs, but I REALLY hate it when we beat ourselves and needlessly throw away points with a whimper. Really hope it's not the start of a bottle job.

Beforehand probably would have taken a point given the players we were missing. McLaughlin should have scored and Nouble could have had two. Not a bad display but didn't produce enough going forwards, just poor luck for their second and Demetriou at fault for the first, allowed him to run too far after being caught of position. Onto the next one now, have to improve from that if we are going to make the play-offs now.

Walton 6 Kicking poor, nutmegged for the first, not a lot else to do other than one good save.
Demetriou 6 Good going forward but caught too far forward too often, looked tired and frustrated late on.
Thompson 8 Rock solid, not a lot he could have done about the goal and did well in a very physical battle.
Ferdinand 8 As above.
White 7 Did very well and didn't look out of place at all, good header for the goal. A little nervous under pressure on occasion.
Atkinson 7 Typical of his performances, never gave up but didn't produce masses.
Amos 6 Has quality but his inexperience showed, a little slow to react and a little lightweight at times.
Timlin 6 Sloppy in possession a few times early on but was dictating the midfield.
McLaughlin 5 Didn't offer much width and failed to beat his man. Never looked confident of scoring that one on one chance which he really should have done better with.
Robinson 6 Started well but tired on the hour mark.
Cox 6 Battled hard but didn't produce anything, dragged his few shots way wide.

Subs
McGlashan 6 Had pace but didn't use it to his advantage.
O'Neill 6 Filled in well but no big impact.
Nouble 4 Every header went straight back up in the air or the wrong way, missed two good chances. Why was he ahead of Fortune?

Given the injuries and suspensions it's one of those you just have to accept and move on. Doesn't make it any easier to take and it certainly couldn't have come at a worse time for us. No blaming here, just one of those days. Charlton had everything come through Ricky Holmes and were typical Karl Robinson diving and playacting, but they played better than their form and league position would suggest, even if we rarely tested them at the back.

Support was superb from start to finish and fair play to Ferdinand for telling McLaughlin what he thought of his decision to sit on the floor in a huff at the final whistle.

Match report: Charlton Athletic 2, Southend United 1

SOUTHEND United slipped out of the League One play-off places after suffering a 2-1 defeat at Charlton Athletic this afternoon.

I know Mooney's not great but how does Nouble get ahead of him? Mooney is limited but has had good performances in the past, he was MotM against our Millwall win at home for example. Nouble just seemed to be a panic buy because we had no fit strikers yet he's still getting sub appearances.

Edit: I assumed Fortune wasn't on the bench, why wasn't he bought on?

On way home - disappointing performance, 2 soft goals conceded - and Frank Nouble ? Oh my god :-( Charlton were for the taking and we blew it!

On the contrary our travelling support was incredible! From the 1st to last minute just superb!

We fight on!

Walton 6 - Not as good as previous matches, kicking was generally good. Gifted them the first.

Demetriou 5 - A defender who is poor defensively... also not a fan of players who get caught attacking and don't bother tracking back half the time.
Thompson 7 - good performance, some distribution a bit wayward but otherwise solid.
Ferdinand 8 - as above but with better distribution.
White 8 - We do look better with him than without. Got a goal too.

Atkinson 7 - Put a shift in, but didn't really create anything.
Amos 6 - he will be a good player, but not quite ready yet... Has a superb football brain but the execution lacks at times.
Timlin 7 - Committed in midfield, worked hard and broke up their play.
McLaughlin 4 - Pretty awful. Hasn't looked very good since he's been back... didn't go past anyone today and missed some very good chances.

Robinson 5 - Runs around a lot but never looks like scoring. I don't understand the love-in with him from our fans...
Cox 4 - Nothing really went right today for him, poor passing and woefully scuffed shots aren't good enough for your number one striker.

Subs
McGlashan 6 - Didn't notice him much to be honest, ran around but didn't offer much more.
O'Neill 6 - Plugged a hole when needed but not the player you need when pushing for a goal.
Nouble 5 - Not going to be as harsh as others on a player who has had next to no game time. Wouldn't have been my choice to come on anyways!

No Ranger no threat no midfield player prepared to get forward or run at them too
much tippy tally sideways passing and aimless long ball

The Valley seems to look different every time I come here. Great ground, big but seems compact. Low ceiling in the away end keeps the noise in so that it is louder 20 mins before KO than most away games during the match.

We started better than them but 8 mins in Demi stood off Holmes for way too long and from a tight angle with their first real attack of the game it was 1-0.

That was against the run of play and we took the hint and pressed and pushed up and within 5 minutes had equalised - John White being on the end of a cross to place the ball into the right of the net.

The rest of the first half was patchy - at times each player looked quality, Ferdinand, Robinson and Cox in particular showing they have a real footballing brain, and pretty much the whole team having moments of class. The majority of the time though was just scrappy.

Amos impressed me with his tackling and not giving up on lost causes but frustrated me on 30 minutes in a period where we were on top - he kept going and kept going then when a potential moment of glory presented he was scared to shoot.

1st half - no lack of effort, but still all to do.

2nd half - started scrappy and got worse. 15 mins in a goalmouth scramble that looked like they had scored twice but somehow neither went in. Next few mins Mcloughlin and Cox wasted great chances but at least we were creating the odd chance.

30 mins into 2nd first bit of class from them and 2-1

Again we reacted with a bit of urgency but as the game wore on we pretty much lost all shape and quality. White being forced off and Timlin dropping back changed the balance of the midfield.

McGlashan for Amos added some pace but with little effect. Robinson had ran out of steam and the introduction of Nouble on 75 minutes was not the impetus that was needed - he seems to be a side netting specialist.

Too many forced changes, too little shape and beaten by a team that lack quality but kept at us and forcing us to make mistakes, which we duly provided.

The vast majority of a large away contingent sang before the match, throughout the match, and after the match. When large numbers cheer their team off the pitch and sing 'to the Championship we're on our way' at the end of a second loss and with the team having dropped out of the playoffs - those dreamers deserve another day at Wembley.

Smith, Coker, Leonard, Wordsworth, Ranger all missing through injury. Five starters out, nearly half the team. Can I suggest that is why we lost today?

Oh and as for the lack of catering other than pies . . . don't get me started!

Beginning to think the team don't like the away supporters when we turn up in numbers!
Charlton were there for the taking and the team just couldn't up their game after getting the equaliser. Unfortunately the injury replacements are just not good enough ,and after McLaughlin missed the golden chance we threw it away.Very poor defending for their first.
Maybe Nouble shouldn't play with lead boots on ....poor substitution ,could go on but out the play offs is what we deserve if we can't take points from teams lacking confidence and on bad runs

Thought PB made the wrong choice of partnership up front, why not play Cox and Fortune who had a great partnership before Ranger became no1 choice. Don't even start me off as to why Nouble was preferred to Fortune.
Mc Laugh lin was awful all game as he was V Bolton and should have been subbed.
Once again we seem to have resorted to playing the ball wide all the time at the expense of forsaking chances to shoot or take on defenders.
Credit to our fans who supported the team even after a poor performance and loss.

The worst Charlton side I've ever known and we made Holmes look like Bale! Embarrassing, gutless, clueless subs from the manager and now it's no longer in our hands!

I said when we signed Nouble he was **** and people criticised me and said they'd give him a chance, well there's his chance and he's ****! Blokes got a 50p head everything pings up or back where it came from! My dead dog would've buried that header.

Very poor today, a rerun of the away games at Gillingham and Milwall, all three were there for the taking but unable to rise to the occasion. Can make excuses but just can't beat the teams that are having a bad time and are struggling. Maybe the team is not as good as we think they are?

Coker
Wordsworth
Lenny
All our best players out. Not an excuse more a reason...missed them massively today. Lenny would have smashed that lot. People dig Wordsworth out but he is quality.
