Hoping to bolster his options - Southend United boss Kevin Maher (Image: Daniel Hambury)

By Chris Phillips@cjphillips1982Chief sports reporter.

SOUTHEND United are in talks to sign a striker, Echosport understands.

Blues boss Kevin Maher has been keen to bolster his attacking options since losing last season’s top scorer Harry Cardwell to Forest Green Rovers back in August.

It is now believed the Shrimpers are trying to complete a deal for a forward currently on the books of a National League club.

But, when asked at his press conference this afternoon, Maher was not giving much away.

“We’re working hard and we’re getting closer we think but we’ll see,” said Maher.

The Shrimpers currently have Bim Pepple, Macauley Bonne, Josh Walker and Danny Waldron vying for selection in attack, along with Jack Wood.

Is it me or am I missing something?

We have 4 strikers already, yes?

Perhaps planning for a long cup run & hard schedule in the new year?
Is someone playing with an injury?
Or just looking for a different type of player? A target man?
Perhaps a function of the multiple sub options?

Bonne - 0 goals
Waldron - 0 goals
Walker - 3 goals
Bim - 7 goals of which 3 were Saturday against Brentwood (although he offers way more than goals)

Rumour ive seen is that Bim might be going back to Luton and loaned back out to a L1/2 side. If so this may explain the story

Or an option in case Pepple is recalled in January.

Sean Adarkwa was linked a while back. Is he now fit again?

Where have you seen this about Bim?

Ah I see. Good point(s).

Two of those players have been injured & a 3rd was getting up to fitness.

Remember a while back we had 4 strikers who couldn't score for toffee?

Hooper, MacDonald, Prince Harry & (can't remember).

Turned out they were decent players after all.

In other words, I am not a fan of the "next please" approach. Just my view/approach. [shoulder shrug]
