Champions League play-off?

a rubbish idea for a rubbish competition, the champions league should be the thing it states to be, a league of champions, only winners should be in it (as it used to be) and they should be drawn out of a pot (fa cup styleee) I may watch a few games then

Yep wont ever happen now though.

Gone too far now Leeblue. Truth of the matter is 4th spot is better than FA Cup or League Cup win. However, teams play 38 games to finish in the top four. To decide 4th place over a couple of matches would be ridiculous.

it makes me sick that finishing fourth in the top division is considered success, even football royalty like liverpool are desperately trying to finish fourth wtf happened there?

It's a hair-brained Scudamore plot in order to extend the season to capitalise on foreign TV markets.

Let me guess, this game would either have the potential to be played abroad or be played at 4pm on a Sunday for mass appeal?

Because the bottom line is the top 4 teams in England are all worthy contenders for the Champions League. The quality of the premiership is so above any other league. Teams like Besiktas and the Dinamos Kievs and Moscows would probably loose to teams like Fulham, Everton and City

the premier league as a whole is average, the title race is as predictable as it is in scotland, two(maybe three) teams dominate while the others scrabble around for scraps, barcelona, real madrid and inter milan would come to the prem and smash most teams (man u and chelsea apart)

leeblue- absoloute nonsense. Chelsea, Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool are leaps and bounds above most team in Europe, I concede Bara because of Xavi and Iniesta. But Inter? Seriously? Real Madrid never mount a serious challenge because there back 4 are about as solid as ours and Tranmeres. The title race in the prem is not that predictable as Scotland, are you joking?

But how many times ahve English clubs progressed to the semis?

And if Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Man U played in Serie A or La Liga dont you think they would smash most teams?

who has won the prem for the last three years????????? liverpool arent even leaps and bounds ahead of man city or villa at the mo, tell me who have liverpool got in the next round of the champions league...............oh thats right they got dicked by everyone in the first round, inter may have been a bold statement having not covered themselves in glory in europe and how long since arsenal won a trophy? oh and please tell me how many times arsenal have won the european cup/champions league, as for the title race not being like scotland I will bet you fifty quid right now that next seasons title will be won by man u or chelsea to make it really exciting arsenal may threaten to win it at the start but then get smacked by man u and chelsea)....sound familiar?

Just like the football league play-offs. if for example we finished 3rd and a team finished 6th but promoted instead off us after finishing 10+ points behind us... i fail to see how this is fair. I hate the play offs as it is but to settle a place in the biggest club competition is just crazy.

What an amazing coincidence. The very moment it looks like a so-called 'Big Four' team will miss out on next year's Champions League, and maybe for some time to come, an idea of a play-off is mooted.

Here's a much better idea. Only have champions qualify for the Champions League. Second and third qualify for the Europa League. Fourth placed team gets sod all except motivation to win the title rather than wallowing in undeserved riches.

Crackpot idea for certain but it mght just happen. Champions league? hardly.

Champions league for ..er..league champions and FA cup winners (or equivalent abroad) only. If a team does the double then both runners-up have a play-off.

Or is that too sensible?
