CCC Team of the Week

I think Mark Gower has come along in (literal) leaps and bounds this season. He seemed to have lost his way this time last year but he appears to have battled through the problems and has become a huge asset for the club. Obviously I haven't seen too much action from him myself (apart from the odd YouTube upload which is much appreciated by us exiles) but I assume that he has been a bit of a revelation this season?

Gower, Barrett and Maher have all adapted well to this league

whereas Guttridge has struggled when he was the one who looked most likely to make the step up

Gower and Maher were bound to adjust quicker because htey've played at this level before, having both been Apprentices at Premiership Clubs. There welll suited to this league because of the training thats drubbed into them as YTS's...

Barrett is more favourable in this league because of how comfortable he is on the ball IMO, and whereas Guttridge is no less talented than Maher or Gower, his talent is more raw and undefined having worked his way up from the bottom. He will adjust, im sure of it, He'll just take longer to do so...

At times I have been very critical of Gower, mainly for shirking a tackle. However this season he has been one of our most effective players cumulating in his superb performance on Saturday against Sheff Wed. He seemed to be involved in almost everything we did and yes his tackling was very good.

Against Norwich he seemed a mite tired, particularly in the first half, but still played well and nothing needs to be said about how well he kept his cool to score that goal !

I thought Gower was poor on tuesday apart from his goal!
But is that because he has had some of his best games of late

About bloody time he made this team. Central to nearly all of our attacks this season until the triple substitution against Norwich.

I think that the big change is his fitness. It looks like he's finally shrugged off the back problems that he'd been suffering (and lets not forget that he apparently suffered a slipped disc in the not-too-distant past), and that meant that he was able to get a proper pre-season under his belt.

Ability-wise I never had any doubts that he'd thrive in this league. With the arguable exception of Eastwood, he's the most talented player in the squad IMO. The only question marks for me were over his fitness and lack of blistering pace.

Seeing as it's open season on one player causing another's good form, I think that with JCR in the team, Mark has options when he cuts inside and looks to pass, moreso than in previous seasons and this allows him to mix up his play more.

Of course, that doesn't explain his Beckham-esque passing this season and fairly fearsome shooting.

I also think that now Gower benefits from having a Winger in JCR that can play down both Flanks as Gower can. If things aren't happening down One side, he can instantly change and try his luck down the other.

For instance, In the past Gower would come up against a Pacy full back and because Pettefer could only play on the Right, Gower was stuck on the left and couldn't beat his man. But now JCR has pace to burn and the two of them can find the Wing that suits them most.

Freddy - Has done it in The Con., Div 2, Div 1 and now in the Championship and maybe Premiershiip! (with us of course I hope ).

Maher - Outstanding and loyalty without question considering when he first joined us, the so called "Stars" would not even pass it to him (they were obviously naieve and feared for their employment). He is Quality and one of the BEST, has stuck with it through the good and the bad times. Is up there with the best who have played for the BLUES!

Gower - a revelation this year ! And he has realised that he can do it at this level. (and who knows).

In that order - with obviously accepting that it is much more difficult to score at this level.

Tilson, you don't cease to surprise me !
