Post-Match Thread and Ratings Carlisle United 2-1 Southend United

I'm getting concerned its 10am Sunday morning(or 11am if you haven't put your clocks back) and we haven't had a match report and ratings from yesterdays game. Have the coaches arrived back in Southend yet?
Are all routes South for our hardy fans blocked? Carlilse Away Supporters where are you, I'm worried and considering sending out a search party.

Think it just sums up the feelings of the fans, that there is no match report 17 hours after the game has finished. We need some good news this week, or I think there will be Lemmings scenes....

Agreed Lee, It has been a very long time since such doom and gloom hung around the club.:darkcloud:

Chris Phillips' comment on the radio yesterday, said it all for me. Something along the lines of he "wanted to throw himself of a roof" the situation was so depressing at the moment!

Tilson for once summed up it (I know a lot of people have said he keeps trawling out the same excuses week in week out).

First 20 minutes we were totally dire & it was only a matter of time before we went behind, although I definitely think the officials should have blown for a Carlisle foul immediately before.

Freedman chased a hit & hope punted ball that Pidgeley seemed in 2 minds to go for & did for his groin, so with limited options on the bench it meant O'Keefe came on. We sort of drifted into a 4-4-1-1 formation with Laurent not knowing whether he should play up front with Barney or stay out wide right. Moussa also started to come into the game a bit more & we then hit the bar after a set-piece. Goal came just before half-term, great long through from Herd, bit of a scramble in the box & then ball dropped for Laurent who tucked it away. You could see the relief in the team as they probably didn't deserve going in at the break level (although we almost didn't as Carlisle then hit the woodwork too).

Started 2nd half a bit jittery again, but as the half wore on we gained control of the midfield, some great triangular passing movements between Francis, McCormack, O'Keefe & Moussa but all this was with no real cutting edge chances other than a couple of long-range shots. As we seemed to take real control of the game I am guessing T&B thought they could nick a win against a very poor Carlisle team. However, disaster then struck as Carlisle broke on their right wing with their winger skinning Johnny Herd (this also pulled Barrett slightly out of position) and their striker beat Mildenhall fairly easily for the winner. A GK his size should never be beaten so easily at his near post. Game fizzled out after that really, they shut up shop & we just had nothing left creatively with Barney becoming increasingly frustrated and earning another stupid yellow.

Only other point of interest was the home biased attitude of the ref, although whenever he made a dubious pro-Carlisle decision he then always seemed to try & even it up by giving the next 50/50 to us.

Apparently the Carlisle manager was getting the sack if they lost & at the end of the day I guess they wanted it more than us. You can see people's attitudes are suffering within our camp though. I believe the Trust had spoken to RM before the game & were told another club statement was coming out at 6pm, don't know if it related to the problems with Friend's loan extension or other potentially dark days looming. Unfortunately again this doesn't seem to have been forthcoming from the club.

As I said last night on my FB status, we need some real answers from Uncle Ron, pretty damn quick!

No real ratings to give, team overall 5/10, tactics 4/10 (we should have killed the game for a point), ref 4.5/10 (homer as mentioned), fans 6/10 (loud again in 2nd half and didn't let the 2nd Carlisle goal stop the singing, no classic Southend with though - I expected some funny Stobart lend us some cash songs), Virgin Trains 8/10 (all on time but I never got the forward facing table seat I requested :p)

How did O'Keefe play mate. Still not seen him yet personally.

In the first 15 to 20 minutes we were terrible, we looked a pub team against the pros as we could barely string two passes together and get out of own penalty area. Pericard, who gave us problems all game, duly scored and I thought we were in for a real drubbing. However, a couple of decent moves and we started to get into the game, hit the woodwork and equalised after a goalkeeping error gifted the ball to Laurent.

Freedman's injury and our only available real sub being O'keefe pushed into playing 4-5-1 and I thought we coped quite well with an unfamiliar formation in the second half, though on occasions Barnard was left a little isolated.

In the second half we looked the team more likely to score but we lacked composure in front of goal when rare shooting chances arose.

After a pretty decent game, Herd was caught out getting the wrong side of Anyinsah chasing down a hopeful long ball and Mildenhall really ought to have saved his shot on goal.

Ratings:

Mildenhall - 6
Grant - 6
Francis - 6
Barrett - 6
Herd - 6
Laurent - 7
Christophe 6
McCormack - 6
Moussa - 6
Freedman - 6
Barnard - 6

Sub - O'Keefe - 6

Ref - 6

I liked the ground, certainly it had a bit more character than Stockport and the horrible open away end. I was quite surprised how big the stand we were in was.

I travelled up on the Settle to Carlisle railway. There were no signs of any other shrimpers on the way up, but I did see a couple on the train on the way back.

cheers glasgow and manina for the reports, dark days all round i guess, the bench yesterday was unbelievable, and without wishing to add to the millions of doom threads, were in a very dire scenario, need to get through these next few weeks alive! if we can i still think with tilly n brush and the current squad (and a fit barney) no matter how slim it is, we have enough to stay up.
do we have enough to stay a business, thats the question.
refuse to join in the RM's ruined us bandwagon, as so far this isnt the case, but aa business permanently running in the red(for whatever reason) is always gonna end someday, especially when the creditors come aknocking.
fingers crossed and wait and see is all we can do.

From SoL

Never will a journey like the one undertook yesterday to Carlisle be called easy and by fate, God or Government doesn't help in the equation either. Leaving Wino hovel in Basildon at 5-45 I set off with SoL 1 loaded with supplies that would keep our men and ladies in the field for the day ahead, we start our round robin pick up service. An hour later everyones aboard and looking forward to the day ahead albeit a long one.
Fran and Ken celebrating their 30 year stretch together added to the supplies with a buffet for the coach, Karen chipped in with doughnuts and chocolate bars not forgetting Kay with her home made cakes the the front rows were resembling a storeroom from Waitrose.
Rain rain everywhere and we head north via M25 and M1 to the M6 Toll road services. So far so good a little detour through Northampton and pass Sixfields and the Coventry ground we arrive at the services for fag and rest stop, armed with a mobile version of Blockbuster's we are entertained and fed and watered with the usual onboard services but still need to stretch our legs. We always seem to meet the famous or not so famous there and yesterday was no different, Linford Christie no less hiding under a green hoodie top.
Stop over and as we leave our friends from the Trust turn up in the Sammy and Elvis special, the rain still heavy as ever but the banter and chat are as good as ever on SoL 1.
More road works and a report from an advance scout tells us to get off the M6 and go through Preston, we do and see our 4th ground of the day and pass Preston North End. Our informer turns out to be tip top and feeds us to the M6 again to the top of the queue of a long tail back. Rain still pouring and some decide to design an ark just in case.
We finally arrive to Carlisle just after 2-00 and we decide to get our tickets and go in as there is a bar inside. We also because of the weather and also to show the world that Shrimper fans are surviviors I had got hold of 6 aircraft lifejackets. They were yellow and also self inflating which was an experience to say the least.
Going around the stadium to the main ticket office Ken and I bump into Ron in the car park. As usual he acknowledged us and we had a little chat, Suffice to say he told us that everything was OK and no need to worry? I being an eternal optimist believe him.

We meet up with our fellow Shrimpers and also with the Trust over nighter special supportes that went up the day previous. Telling us of their leisurely day we soon hit the bar. Lifejackets get through the security and doning them and refuelled with ale we discover our seats.

Armed with our lifejackets we stand proud amongst the travelling army although recieving puzzled looks. The lads in Yellow and Mildy in Red we are playing towards Scotland. An early onslaute goes on and we seem powerless to get out of our half let alone our area. The inevitable goal comes and we find ourselves facing a 1-0 scoreline. This seem to inspire the lads to put thier game together. Dougie showing lots of promising runs and probing decides it's his day over and is subbed with O'keith on to take his place. We go close and hit the bar from a corner and keep the pressure on. Carlisle seem to stutter and just before half time Laurent has his moment and having a couple of goes finally get the ball into the Carlisle net.
Half time and it's 1-1 and we feel confident that we can get something from this game even with our restricted squad. The ref who seem s to be a homer issues cards like confetti but all to Shrimper players.
Laurent still having the better of his markers and a scare from Carlise hitting the bar we still look godd on the counter until...
a break from the right and their player turns Heard, lack of support for Heard and from an ascew angle Mildy is beaten and so are we.
Tough tackling and loads of off the balls means the game ends in face to face exchanges on the pitch. a fair result would have been a draw and on a positive note thought that the Shrimplings had a good game but Laurent got the MoM award on the way back from SoL1.

Guess what? we begin our long journey back when it starts to rain. Rumours abound and someone on the coach recieves a text saying we've been bought by a Dubai businessman for a £5, debts cleard, stadium financed and Tilly backed with £0000's .
Yeah right?
Rain rain go away...make good time down the road until we discover that a boat had come off it's trailer on the M6 near Preston, should have given them our lifejacket Fran remarks. more supplies are spent on our travelling party which includes TrueBlue and Pal coming home with us and in fine form. M6 services and again this week it's the Oldham team we meet up with as well. All three Shrimper coaches running in convoy we're back in Essex well before midnight.
Our sing songs on the way back did lighten the mood but then again we usually have a luagh what ever the result.
New awards for the long journey were introduced and the first winner for the Supporter of the trip went to Bucket and Spade for his fantastic contribution to the trip and his drumming. Junior Shrimper award went to Andrew Pilcher who travel down to Basildon to be on SOL 1 from Liverpool? Well done young lad and the slumberland award for Rip Van Winlkle impression went to Adam Fewster.
A presentation for 30 years service went to Frances and Ken took the chocolates.
Another very long but enjoyable trip and a Big Thank you to all the guys who helped make it a great day..again

Depends what roof he was referring to, It could be anything from a wendy house to the civic centre.

I didn't make the trip yesterday as I have been to the last couple of games there and I admire those that did especially if we were that bad. Maybe some of the background activity going on in the club is having a knock-on effect on the players as in truth do we really know what is occurring.

Well I asked for a report and I certainly got one.Great read thanks a lot and well done one and all for making the trip

Was dreading how much I was going to find on here after not being on it for getting on for 36 hours hence the delay in my match comments!

Wino's covered a lot to do with the travel and general ambience and Rich, much of the game. First 20 minutes were shocking, with only Dougie and Adam really looking as if they had any fight in them - and we were 1 down very quickly. Poor old Dougie though, he'd looked good and Carlisle were absolutely sh*t scared of him and then he pulled up (Macca also limping around this time incidentally), on comes O'Keefe and we went into 4-5-1 (that was what I thought!) and suddenly looked to be putting stuff together. Franny Laurent got a few runs going, Moussa too, although he looked off form generally. Good goal from Franny. 2nd half we looked comofrtable, and their winner was against run of play. Handbags at the end with Tilly and Brush and the officials, don't know why though.

Chris Phillips wanted to know my ratings while we were on our way home so I'll stick to what I told him - 6s all round, apart from Dougie and Franno 6.5, Franny and Adam 7 and O'Keefe 7.5.

Phone battery died cos there was so much excitement and gossip going on so I don't know how that compared to his in the end!

More fun at the services incidentally where we bumped into the Oldham squad, nice pleasant chaps, happy to have a chat. :) (Oh and did Wino say we saw Linford "the Lunchbox" there on the way up :O)

Incidentally, the players coached up as well, not flew as in previous years.

In spite of living only 90 miles away, i managed to miss the kick off due to road works on the A66, my plan to make up time by bombing up the M6 was also thwarted by more roadworks and speed restrictions.
As already mentioned we were a shambles for first 20 minutes but after that I thought we were the better team and certainly looked the more likely winners for most of 2nd half.
Both sets of fans were quiet - though there was a group of southend fans who made an admirable effort throughout and did get the rest of us going with a 'southend's yellow army' chant for several minutes in 2nd half.
Generally speaking though the off-field situation seemed to hang over the whole occasion.
To be honest at the moment I would bite the hand off anyone who can secure our financial future
ps anyone know why Carlisle's number 21 gestured at the Southend fans after they scored their second? Don't think the officials spotted it.
