Car Trouble

... well not my car but my sister-in-laws car... It's a 1994 Astra and there is a chip (10mm diameter) in the nearside headlight, so I believe it will fail the MOT.

Were is the best place I can buy a replacement unit that will not cost a fortune ?

I live in Southend/Leigh area...

Try Ebay.

I keep a 1989 Audi 100 estate as a workhorse vehicle and have managed to find spares at a fraction of the cost.

I purchased a pair of headlights for £30 the pair when an Audi specialist wanted £270 each for them.

There's no MOT here in Aus which is nice

Unless the rules have changed (yet again) your headlight would pass MOT so long as the beam pattern is unaffected. Of course unless you have access to a beam tester you won't know for sure.
For the record my shed of a car flew through test and one headlight is cracked top to bottom.

Back in 1990 my Fiat 131 Mirafiori passed an MOT with a headlight half full of water.
