Who should be captain next season?

With the debate popping up a couple of times recently. Who should be captain next season? I mainly mean out on the pitch, commanding everyone. Not the "club captain" whatever the hell that is anyway.

Clear candidates I can think of are:

Adam Barrett - Mr blue himself. Done it towards the end of the season but maybe won't feature as much next year.

Ryan Leonard - Become our most consistent player for a couple of seasons now. Seems to Marshall the midfield well and can always be relied apon.

John White - The official "club captain" well as far as I'm aware anyway. Done it well in league two and the start of the season. But tailed off towards the end.

Michael Timlin - Might be a strange choice to many but he seems to have that passion and grit to command a team on the pitch. Sure I've seen him wearing the armband before.

Barrett - Leader, legend, should be captain. Only question mark will be that he won't be up to playing every game, so who will be the vice-captain in his absence.

Leonard - Didn't Phil claim a while back that he didn't like being given the armband as the extra pressure affected his performances? If not, would be between him and Timlin for vice-captain for me.

White - Regardless of what he does off the pitch, he's not a leader on the pitch. Quiet captains do exist yes, but they lead by example. White does not.

Timlin - Undoubtedly probably the best leader on the pitch and is constantly talking to teammates and getting in the refs ear when needed. If he can stay fit he would be a great choice.

Alternatively, Phil could be looking at bringing in a player who could step up to have a role as vice-captain. Other than these four it is hard to nominate anyone else in our current squad who could do a job.

If he plans on starting Barrett then it's a no brainer. Leonard if not.

Stop this obsession with Barrett. Captain my Arse !!!!! Overrated, over the hill and the 'backbone' of a defence in the second half of the season that was less than spectacular.

None of them:

Barrett: Should not be a given to play every game, no disrespect to him but I don't think he's up to a continuous run of games, therefore no suitable for captaincy

Leonard: Quite possibly the player to command our midfield but does not need to the distraction of captaincy yet, let him take control of the midfield this season, captaincy next season

White: Brown's lost confidence in him, doubt he will be first choice right back, therefore will not be on the pitch enough to lead

Timlin: Probably the strongest candidate but again will have to be in form and consistency of such that we have not seen from him, to command a start in every game and therefore the captaincy

So, I've left myself without an answer, how about Thompson?

We are seriously in relegation form and I do not think it's going to improve next season!!

so it does not matter who the captain is!!!

So many people talk about form when referring to a captain. Am I the only person who thinks you don't have to in great form to be a great leader.

PB bought in White and mad him captain, perhaps one of the new signings ( when there are new signings ) will be made captain. As for Barrett i agree he may not be on the ground enough to warrant the captaincy. Leonard at this stage dosent want it ,Timlin dosent command a regular place in the team.White again dont think he will command a regular spot in the team.Bentley is leaving ,dosent leave much does it. Perhaps Hunt if he signs again and can stay fit, or Moussa again if he signs and can stay fit.Player can lead by example dosent neccassarily need to be loud .

Glad I don't have to post vitriolic judgements based upon the view from Hong Kong.

That's the wonderful thing about the internet, you can post vitriolic judgements from anywhere in the world, even locally. But I guess you already know that.:smiles:

This is why I voted Timlin

I love Tims, if he hadn't have spent most of last season injured then he'd have been a shoe in for me. Bought just about everyone at the Rendezvous a drink at the sponsors evening, someone who really appreciates the fans.
