As nobody else has stepped up to the plate, I suppose I might as well! :winking:

No it wasn't an excitement fest, but it wasn't as bad as some would make out. It was a useful workout for certain players and most importantly we got an hour out of Dickinson, that we didn't see coming. Something that it did highlight for me was the real lack of depth on the wings, should we play 4-4-2. If anything happens to Hall/Johnson that we're a little stuck. Yesterday, we had 4 central midfielders playing and it really showed. Smith, Sawyer and Woodyard had a go on the wing and none of them looked comfortable. Della-Verde, even with his complete lack of willingness to pass the ball, made a big difference as he gave us width and an attacking threat down the wing. Unfortunately his introduction came as Dickinson went off, so we had less quality up top, as 16 year old Njie struggled to get into the game.

Bentley: Didn't have to make a single save, but he claimed a couple of crosses well and his kicking was decent enough. For an 18 year old, he's vocal and commanding enough. I really think there is real potential there and certainly more than we've seen from a youth keeper for quite some time.

Leonard: I really, honestly, think we've picked up a decent gem here. Everytime I've seen him he's looked a decent footballer. He got forward well, overlapped well, yet got back and did his defensive duties efficiently as well. And no surprise, but he nearly scored with a thumping shot that the keeper did well to tip over.

Coughlan: The usual blood and guts from Coughlan. I think the Canvey forwards knew they were in a game.

Gilbert: Did well enough at centre half to show that if something out of the ordinary happens with injuries, he could cover there.

Nesbitt: I thought he had a decent enough game. Very energetic and got up and down the line well, he wasn't afraid to get stuck into a challenge or two. Shows promise.

Woodyard: He's a busy little player, but I'm still struggling to see him as anything other than a water carrier. Very early on, after an excellent knock down from Dickinson, he drew a very decent save from their keeper. He was tidy enough in the middle, but square peg, round hole doesn't even start to describe what he looked like when he was moved to the right.

Sawyer: When playing centrally, he was a class above, but as soon as he got switched to the right after about 70 minutes, he disappeared, proving it's a waste to play him out there. Managed to get booked for dissent and then strolled off down the tunnel at full time, whilst the rest of the squad were getting a teamtalk on the pitch meaning Luke Hobbs had to go and get him. I can't help but feel that old attitude of his is starting to crawl back.. On the pitch though, he does seemingly always give 100%, even in games like this.

N'Diaye: Not great. Every so often he'd break up an attack with his long legs and you could see he'd be of some use, but he never really showed much other than that. The players around him were getting very, very frustrated with him. But the utter mouthful he himself gave George Smith at one point was pretty disgraceful.

Smith: He looked very neat and tidy and certainly shows some real potential. Has good feet, good technique and a decent enough brain. A loan spell for a couple of months could really push him on. I was impressed yesterday with the way he manages to work some space for himself on the ball.

Dickinson: As I said on the other thread, he showed some really nice touches. What I was most impressed with was the amount of times he managed to hold off a defender with his strength and chested the ball off to a teammate. Showed nice feet and a good work ethic.

Asante: I still think he's a really interesting prospect. He does show some real naivety on occasions, as he did yesterday, but I don't think we've had a quicker striker for some years. The amount of times yesterday that he gave the defender a three or four yard start and still ghosted past him was very impressive. I wouldn't loan him out just yet, as he offers a real threat with his pace from the bench.

Cheers for the report andy. just looking forward to the season start now, Im sure most other league 2 clubs fans are gushing about their signings and thinking there gonna have a great season, to me it seems that PS is still tinkering, and im hoping that we can start scoring! the debate rages, but i still feel were a pacey striker short. i guess you could say our 3 first choice strikers are all targetmen, and i feel this approach limits us slightly.
anyway, roll on the proper football :)

Awesome report Andy. Gives me great insight into the squad and a great deal of confidence in our future. I am really glad we are hanging onto some youngsters. At least they will know they had their chance. Loan them out and who knows. I am so inspired by PS, can't wait for the season proper. Up the Blues!
