Canned Beetroot with a ringpull

Ron Manager

formerly Libertine
OK, one of the strangest titles to a thread I admit....but I need your help. One of those drunken conversations you have in the pub after football and a few beers led to my mate setting a challenge to the rest of us that you can't get a can of beetroot with a ring pull opening. Don't ask me how we got onto this topic (we were all very drunk at the time) but for some reason this has taken on the form of a challenge that the rest of us are determined to win. This must exist somewhere and we are determined to prove him wrong.

An unusal request I know but any help or pointers to where we can get one will be VERY gratefuly received!

When I was a kid my mum always used to get a hamper at christmas.

This would invariably contain some of the most bizarre items ever committed to a can and eight months later these would end up in some poor sods harvest festival parcel.

These could be a good places to start looking.

Beetroot in a can isn't the issue...it's the ringpull lid that's our challenge. Apparently it's to avoid people splattering themselves with beetroot juice as they open it so they are only in ones that need an old fashioned can opener.

I am aware how strange this is, but this is just one of those times when a drunken conversation about nonsense takes on a life of it's own. We are determined to prove him wrong....there is beer at stake!

I've never heard of beetroot in a ring pull can, as I think it's sold mainly in jars. I do remember a mate of mine consuming a whole jar of baby beets for a bet once. The next morning he was alarmed to see the pan was stained purple, his first thought was that his internal organs were heading down the khazi until he remembered the curse of the baby beets. Apparently it took his mum about three weeks to remove the purple stain he had left. :puke

Beets - yes
Canned - yes
No ringpull though.. :nope:

Now this is sly....
would you be able to win the bet by taking an open can with a ring pull and putting Beetroot in it? Should you fail to find what you are looking for as the original real deal. I am thinking this would be a great example of gamesmanship!!

seems to be an Aussie thing, the first dozen or so hits on google images for Tinned beetroot was all .com.Au sites or similar

You are correct. They love the stuff out there, particularly the Kiwis, who traditionally have it in their burgers. I give you the McDonals kiwi burger

No sign of ring pulls though.

Won't work....this guy had the same bet with his cricket team over here and they resorted to super glueing a ring pull lid on top of a beetroot can. However he saw through that.

I do like Mr Plow's suggestion though....that may sneak through on a technicality
