Cambridge UCCE vs Essex

Essex have built up a massive 406-4 after the first day of a three day first-class fixture against Cambridge University Centre for Cricketing Excellence at Fenners.

In the process, middle-order batsman Ryan ten Doeschate compiled the opening first-class century of the English summer, retiring out on 146 from just 147 balls. In the process he overtook Mark Pettini, the captain, who made 153 not out from 206 balls batting at number four, a position that he should be much more suited to this season with the burden of skippering the side at such a young age.

Tomorrow, weather permitting, should see the first appearance in an Essex shirt of young wicketkeeper Adam Wheater, who appears behind the stumps in the absence of James Foster, who is playing for the MCC against Sussex at Lord's. Wheater probably won't bat, but he should get some action with the gloves.

Bout time as Pett's needs some runs desperately! Ryan was superb last year for Essex and hope he continues in the same vein this season!

At stumps on a rain-affected second day, Cambridge UCCE are 76-2, with both wickets having fallen to new-boy David Masters. He has decent figures of 10-6-9-2, which will see us go well if he can reproduce that on a regular basis in the County Championship. Essex declared on their overnight 406-4.

Meanwhile, the final day's play at Lord's in the MCC vs Sussex fixture was washed out, not giving Ravi Bopara or James Foster a chance to atone for their first innings failures. Sussex duo Matt Prior and Luke Wright haven't done their Ebgland chances any harm, though, the latter smashing a career-best score on day three. Owais Shah, obviously, stood out for MCC when batting conditions appear to have been a little less favourable.

Fozzie needs to sharpen up big time with his batting - I was actually quite cross with his dismissal. Ravi needs to focus on his batting; his bowling is tidy, but not penatrating enough. If Ravi has a place in the side, it's challenging Collingwood - as a batsman who can occasionally bowl if needed. Ravi simply isn't fast enough with the ball to fulfil an all-rounder's role.

Prior played OK, but no better. I can't see Ambrose sweating too much on his place. MCC's bowling was fairly tepid, and in those circumstances, both Prior and Yardy's batting disappointed. Prior's glovework was a bit better than in recent months, but still by no means error-free.

Luke Wright was fantastic, and if he keeps playing like that, he'll be in the one-day side in no time at all. He was excellent with both bat and ball.

Good to see Pettini get some runs. I know its only Cambridge, but he wouldn't have made any last season against them.

It looks like being a long season for Essex, as I can't see anyone making 1000 runs and only Masters taking 50 wickets (although Bopara and Kaneria should do well when international selection allows).

Harsh, but probably true. I hope the addition of Gallian may add some strngth to the top of the order.

Agree about Masters he has been a decent performer on the County circuit for a few years.

Nel will be pretty handy for us when he's not playing for the Saffers though, won't he...?

I think he's only here for a few games Matt, while Kaneria has a break. With Saffers selection policy he may not get on this tour, as he was left out the India tour initially for Langeveldt, then when he dropped out for Zondieki. Their racial quota policy is truly a farce, I'll never forget them leaving out Boucher when we won there a few years ago, for a black keeper who probably hasn't been seen near their Test or ODI squad since.

Ah, fair enough. A shame, as I think he would be very handy. Can't we get him on a Kolpak - LOL?

:p

And, of course, Danish... are we going to bowl him to death again this year, poor lad?!

Bloody Kolpak is seriously annoying.

I think that's why Danish is having a rest before he has to get through about 1500 overs.

Fozzie's batting disappointed in India on the Lions tour as well - I fear that his international ambitions have been severely hit this winter/spring, despite reservations regarding both Ambrose and Prior. As for Ravi, it's an indictment on Essex's bowling that he was first change for much of last season, although in theory that should improve his performances with the hand. In the long-term, he has to aim for Collingwood's spot.
