Calzaghe v Jones Jr

IMO as big a fight as Hatton mayweather , both dominated their respective divisions in the last 10 years with Joe getting the edge from the uk bookies as he has been active in the lkast 4 years at the top level .

Trouble for me is that no matter how much i want JC to win and retire as the greatist british boxing legend of all time , i fear that Jones has too much in his locker for joe and if both had fought each other at their peak i am certain Jones would knock him out within 9 rounds , he is a class technicion who has won titles at 3 different weights , just feel he will be to strong for our welsh friend.

As it is jones is coming into the fight on the back of some defeats and the bookies don;t fancy him at all .

Being a realist i would be lad to overlook jones @ 9-4 with coral and have backed him like i did with mayweather , as i say there is no friends and feelings involved in the betting game .

Anyone else think Jones is gonna do the biz sat night ??

Never discount a true warrior and I think that Jones may well win this fight.

Certainly feel if they had fought a few years ago that Jones would have been victorious. Having said that though, I hope Joe comes through to win and retire un-defeated.

Spot on there sir!

Doubt I'll have a bet, but certainly looking forward to watching the fight. A big one at MSG between two boxing greats. You've got to be loving that.

Aparently only half the 20 k capacity tickets have been sold as feel this is a big fight ??

Jones is one of the classist fighters i have seen , if not the slickist , i would say Joe is favourite to win the fight but how can a man who has won that many fights with his knockout ratio be a 9 to 4 shot .

Can see him nicking it on points , may not make for great viewing if Jones feeds joe the jab all night and gets on his bike , Calazghe some how has the knack of getting fighters to fight toe to toe which i'm hoping willl happen tonight .

Debating a crafty fiver on Jones in the tenth - I thought Joe lost to Hopkins and I think a motivated Jones can beat Calzaghe based on that performance. Mainly, just looking forward to the fight. Fair play to Setanta for not making this PPV - Sky, take note.

Have taken a break from razzing fat Northern birds in Tenerife to watch this. Bring it on!

Adding to that, I've just been chatting to Kenny Sansom's missus (pictorial evidence provided). I tried to raz her daughter but no luck.

Great fight, Calzaghe always in control after the first round. No bars left so going to have to kip then get back on it.....

Lost £40 on the fight , but not bothered in the least , cracking display from Calazghe , bow out at the top now fella as one of the best fighters in my life time and with a perfect record .

He's got a good sort on his arm , a few mill in the bank and doesn't really show any signs on his face to suggest he's been a boxer for the last 30 years , so get out whilst your a legend .

Delighted to be proved wrong on this one. Congratulations Joe - now retire and go out at the top. You really have nothing left to prove and will now certainly be remembered as one of the all time greats.

Didn't stay up but watched it 'as live' this morning. Cracking entertainment and delighted that Calzaghe took the spoils. Surprised all three judges made it 118-109 - I thought it was a fair bit closer than that.

didn't Calzaghe throw twice as many punches... most of the reports I read seemed to suggest it was that one sided after being put down in the first

After the first round it was all about JC. JC was toying with RJJ, then would get him in the corner and not stop throwing punches at him. I think he knew he didn't have a big enough punch to knock Jones out so used his work rate to win on points with ease.

Hopefully he'll retire now as the longer he goes on the more chance he'll have of losing his '0'. However I'd expect him to carry on for one for fight in Cardiff prob against RJJ again or Chad Dawson if the money is right.

Anybody see the slow-mo footage of the fight on the news last night?

JC took an uppercut straight to the mouth and the way his head reacted was extraordinary. Also, following that punch he regained his composure so quickly. Don't know if anyone can access the clip, but have a look it's amazing.

I remembered why I'm a lover not a fighter..!

The Guardian:

Round 1

Calzaghe throws combinations from the start, Jones waiting to counter with single shots - and he drops Calzaghe in centre ring with a short left, followed by a right hook that slices an opening on the bridge of his nose. Jones 10-8

Round 2

Jones throws more punches and lands a long, heavy right, but Calzaghe replies with flurries that drive him to the ropes, setting the pattern for the remainder of the fight. Calzaghe 10-9

Round 3

Jones is moving well - until Calzaghe pins him in his own corner and unloads to head and body. The American sneaks in an uppercut, answered with a scintillating finish to the round by Calzaghe. Calzaghe 10-8

Round 4

Calzaghe is now confident he has Jones's number. Jones retreats to the ropes as he struggles to match the pace of Calzaghe's assaults. Calzaghe 10-9

Round 5

Jones feints, hoping to draw Calzaghe on to another left-right trap, but the Welshman is totally in command, hands down and stalking his opponent around the ring. Calzaghe 10-9

Round 6

Jones's successes are sporadic now. Calzaghe works his ribs over. Jones is powerless to change the rhythm of the fight. Pace is unrelenting. Calzaghe 10-9

Round 7

Calzaghe rocks Jones with a big left, his hardest shot of the fight so far. There now seems no way back for the American, who is cut near the edge of his left eye and cannot hold Calzaghe at bay, even on the ropes. Calzaghe 10-9

Round 8

A big round for Calzaghe. Blood flowing freely from Jones's cut and he looks a sorry sight as Calzaghe throws punches from all angles. Jones can't live with the pace of the contest. Calzaghe 10-8

Round 9

It is now pretty much a lost cause for Jones. The fight is now embarrassingly one-sided and Calzaghe can coast a little, shipping a right to the head, but he is still in charge. Calzaghe 10-9

Round 10

The doctor takes a close look at Jones's cut and the fighter is late to start the round. The extra rest does him little good. Calzaghe ups the pace again and inflicts serious pain on his opponent for most of the round. Calzaghe 10-8

Round 11

Jones has the option of pulling out, with blood around his eye, but he carries on - again late for the start of the round. It is his last flurry, a few desperate shots miss the target wildly. Calzaghe 10-9

Round 12

An anticlimactic finish. Calazaghe takes it easy on Jones; Jones, acknowledging the unspoken truce, does not try for a shock late kayo finish. There is respect and resignation. Even round 10-10

Mitchell's overall score 118-107

I would have thought the Trotskyite comic would have awarded the fight to the guy who ran away the most. And blamed George W Bush for global warming with more conviction. Seriously, I don't think JC deserved either of those 10-8 rounds, and I had a couple more even. He won the fight convincingly though, no argument about that, especially as the knockdown was a forearm.
