Button favourite to win

steveo

mine to stay the same please
BrawnGP going well Button installed as favourite. Could a new team win their first race? It happened before – can anyone remember the last one to do it – without hunting round google.
Answers please................

Alfa Romeo certainly won their debut race but I'm guessing you mean a team in the more recent past ;)

Anyway, you can all wake up to the shock news that Williams dominated the first practice session!

Nakajima 1:26:687
Rosberg 1:26:736
Raikkonen 1:26:750

Button 6th, Hamilton 16th???!!

By the way, the BBC live coverage is top notch. Showing the practice sessions live could well be a very smart move to appease the petrol heads missing ITV's excellent presentation.

The answer I was looking for was Jody Schekter driving the Wolf WR2 for the Walter Wolf Racing Team in 1977.

Wolf was a Canadian who had previously financed Frank Williams F1 ventures. For a few years Williams cars were a joke and ran round at the back of the field. Wolf started his own team and won his first race. Faded away and departed the scene in 1979. Frank Williams got Saudi Arabian backing, and went on to dominate the F1 scene for years to come.

And today his cars get the fastest times. Thought you would all like to know.

I think Wolf took over the Hesketh F1 Team rather than starting again from scratch so the car was already developed, which is exactly what happened with Brawn GP taking over Honda.

well hunt won in 76 which means he had not driven for Hesketh for at least a year so it's unlikely Wolf would have taken over a 2 or 3 year old team and won but I do stand to be corrected

Saying absolutely nothing about the result here to spoil the re-run for anyone but  (hope that's ok!)
