Post-Match Thread and Ratings Brighton 1 Southend 3

sussex by the sea

SZ Fantasy League Champ 08/09.
Draw would probably have been a fairer result but we defended very well and the 2nd and 3rd goals were very well taken. Barney's 2nd was superb although I don't think our defenders would have given a striker so much time and space. Robinson worked extremely hard up front with little service from midfield.

Mildy's injury did not look too serious. Joyce seemed to play ok but as he was about 400 yards away from the away end it was difficult to say, he did make a good save at the end though.

Quite a few of the players and Tilly and Brush made the effort to walk around the dismantled hammer net to applaud the fans - appreciated.

If we keep taking our chances like this, then who knows what might happen ?!

In my opinion, game had draw written all over it until a flash of brilliance. 2nd half we had you pretty much pinned in your half and you just kept hoofing it up to whoever number 17 is.

Am disappointed we've had 2 games that we should have drawn being lost in the 80th+ minute, usually due to a wonder goal.

Yeovil is now a must win for us, and they're a complete bogey side, however they appear to be in freefall and we are playing a *lot* better than we did under Adams.

Justice done then after the muggings of last season's game at the Withdean and the blue/white striped referee changing the game at the Hall early this.

Brighton OS seemingly not happy with the Southend victory, some strong words about how it was "undeserved".....Is Spartan actually the B&HA media manager? ;)

Just back and my thoughts were that we dominated the 1st half and had so much space down the right hand side it was obvious where our breakthrough would come from. Equaliser was very much against the run of play and Macca was unlucky to have his strike ruled offside. (I would know as I was in line with play!;))

2nd half probably belonged to Brighton and Forster gave us trouble when he came on. Thank god he started on the bench. Barny's 2nd was class and again I had a great view of it. 3rd was a sucker punch as they pushed up.

Wasn't at the game or even in this evening but I love everyone who called for Federici or Flavs back as soon as Mildy got injured. Glad to see everyone panicing, thank god you lot aren't our manager.

Thought we deserved to win the game, as we played with better pace in respect to the last 2 goals. Should have pressed more after the first goal and fairly poor defending for the goal they scored, keeper could have maybe done more.

I like joyce he is unreliable i will admit, but mildy's not exactly a steady eddy and joyce seems capable of making more spectucular saves that can *save* hahaha points

We should have been awarded the 'goal' disallowed right on half time. As it was, Brighton had the fillup of an equaliser, which made the second half that more difficult. It was also nice to have been in a pub in Brighton called The Dyke Tavern.

Got to feel for the home team, though, having to play in what is another Southchurch Arena but with more seats and less atmosphere. It must be dispiriting to play their every other week. They'd be better off in the tennis club.

A bit of a lacklustre display during the second half, but I'm looking forward to seeing Barnard's second again - it looked like a goal fit to win any match. We're top of the form table now, and I hope that Tilly, Brush and the players will receive the credit they deserve for that.

Mildenhall - 7 - Didn't have to do much, but solid as ever. No chance with the goal.
Sankofa - 6.5 - Caught out badly for their goal, but otherwise OK.
Dervite - 7.5 - Didn't particularly stand out, but what a difference his presence makes.
Clarke - 7.5 - Committed as ever.
Barrett - 7 - Did well at the back, but needs to hurry up on throw-ins before the opposition are organised.
Betsy - 6.5 - Good assist for Theo's goal, but pretty anonymous otherwise.
McCormack - 7 - Typical performance, no idea whether the offside call was a good one for the disallowed strike.
Grant - 8 - MOM - Coming into his own now. Great commitment, covering at the back and calm distribution.
Moussa - 7 - Good technique and possession football, starting to look like he belongs in the team.
Barnard - 8 - Frequently muscled out of it, but did what he's there to do. Great second goal.
Robinson - 7 - Struggled a bit tonight, I thought. Never gave up, and a well taken goal, though.

Joyce - 7.5 - Two very good stops and otherwise solid.
Christophe - 6.5 - Looked a bit off the pace to me as Brighton controlled the game. Not terrible though.
Francis - Didn't get long enough to give a fair rating.

I was in the home end (behind the dugouts) with some of my family so had a much better view than most of the shrimpers in that laughable away end which is so far away from the pitch.

We were all over them 1st half - thought we deserved a ht lead, but Owusu took his goal well.

2nd half I thought Brighton were the better side - we haven't played that badly in ages.

I thought a draw would have been a fair result.

My ratings:

Mildy 7 (a virtual spectator in the half he played)
Sankofa 7 (neat and tidy defending, tried to overlap Betsy a few times)
Barrett 7 (usual committed performance)
Clarke 8 (Best of the back 4)
Dervite 6 (Strangely out of sorts tonight, not his usual commanding self)
Betsy 6 (will he ever take on and beat a full back? Probably not!)
Grant 7 (Tough tackling committed display - similar to the Chelsea games)
Macca 6 (Not himself really, subbed)
Moussa 7 (Tried hard down the left, gets pulled out of position to easily for me though)
Barnard 7 (2 good goals, er that's about it, but that's what he's paid for!)
Robinson 7 (worked hard, but not that effective)

Subs

Joyce 6 (kept a clean sheet - couple of dodgy communication moments though)
Christophe 7 (played well when he came on)
Francis 6 (only on for seconds, did he touch the ball?)

From Tilly's post match interview, sounds like Macca's done his groin again which was why he was subbed. Brighton probably not the best of places for that to happen. Too early to say how serious his or Mildy's injuries are.

Just saw the goals on SSN, cracking one for Barney's 2nd and the other two are the kind we've been missing all season - real proper forwards' goals!

What I saw was a blonde stick man open the scoring so I recognised that one as Barnard. I couldn't identify either of the black stick men who assisted with the goal but from the positioning I assume it was Robinson who had the first shot and Moussa who had the follow up.

We looked so comfotable until Sankofa comically sold himself allowing the cross for Owusu to equalise.

That gave them a boost and from then on if someone had said the score would be 3-1 you would have to say it would be to Brighton.

However, class second goal and good counter attack with a great cross from Sankofa for the third.

Can't rate them as they were all too far away.

If you're a Brighton fan, you just know you're going down. Their finishing was absolutely atrocious. Perhaps by the time we play them again they'll have their new ground ready so we don't have to endure that rubbish view any more.

Fixed :)

Good to see Betsy getting a bit of form - I've always like him and stuck up for him in his bad patch of form. Looks like he is back to the kind of performances he was giving in August!

Was it? I thought Betsy made the run and laid it to Sankofa who put the ball in?

See, can't even see it when it happens at the closest end!

Right, here are my ratings for the match from my seat in the away end...

Mildenhall - ? (Couldn't see him)
Sankofa - ? (Couldn't see him)
Dervite - ? (Couldn't see him)
Clarke - ? (Couldn't see him)
Barrett - ? (Couldnt see him)
Betsy - ? (Didn't he set up one of the goals? Couldn't see)
Grant - ? (Couldn't see him)
McCormack - ? (Couldn't see him)
Moussa - ? (Couldn't see him)
Robinson - ? (He scored didn't he?)
Barnard - ? (He scored two didn't he?)
Subs - ? (Didn't see them)

View from the away stand - 0.5 (awful stadium, atmosphereless, sat miles away from the pitch, the whole stadium is a joke. Not going back there in a hurry, how do the Brighton fans put up with it week in and week out???)

In all seriousness though, I thought that Grant had a great game, and Barnard's 2nd goal (didnt see the first!) was just pure genius! Thought that was the confidence boost that he needed to kick start his scoring again, and hopefully he can reach double figures before the end of the season. Theo's goal was good but at least we are taking our chances and getting the goals!

WHAT A SHOCKING STADIUM, NOT GOING BACK THERE IN A HURRY!

That's just 'cause you're going blind though :p. We'll let you off for the far end.

i found it all rather pleasant - a mild evening in a suburban street with a load of seats from a golf course - some men playing football in the distance -

a few stewards wondering around and a nice tea stand -

just don't understand why i had to pay 20 quid for it

We could have done without Tranmere beating Leicester. Once again, another win (and a Colchester loss) will only gain us one place. We are the form team in the division but are barely moving - so frustrating! I keep hearing people saying we are 6 points off the playoffs - it's actually 7 because our goal difference is so poor. Don't think we are going to do it - hope I'm wrong.
