Only read TKAMB fairly recently and I ate it up - my original choice for this battle. Absolutely amazing work of fiction - and I almost called my daughter Scout.

Blimey, a duel between two that I have read. However good Of Mice and Men is, I don't think anything will beat TKAM for me though.

Right, my chance to stick up for my choice of these 2 American classics. There's so much to OMAM and it's put across in such a simplistic way. Friendship, trust, unachievable aspirations, justice, injustice, prejudice are covered so eloquently throughout. My 2 favourite aspects to OMAM are;
1) Curly's wife has no name...she is only ever referred to as 'Curly's wife'. This gives the reader a constant reminder that she is property and therefore there is always an underlying sense of danger, menace and temptation around her.....
2) The relationship between the the smart-Alec, streetwise George and the slow, affable, doesn't-know-his-own-strength Lennie is a format that has been imitated countless times since. Think Hans Solo/Chewbacca, think DeVito/Schwarzenegger in Twins, think Jack Payne/Barry Corr :-)

Take English Lit GCSE at night school and you'll have to analyse the language surrounding Curley's wife (and the significance of her never being named) so often that the phrase 'Of Mice and Men' will make your parents fein blindness so as to avoid proofreading yet another essay on it. Good book though.
