Boris Yeltsin dead

Let's have a moment's silence please for one of the world's most spectacular drunkards. Anyone remember when he got off a plane and found a brass band waiting for him? ****-faced, he stumbled down the steps, shoulder-barged the conducter off the podium and took over stick-waving duties himself, in front of the bemused world. He was a Booze Legend.

So terrifying that he had his vodka-soaked finger on the button for so long.

Also responsible for creating Chelski, by handing out all the old nationalised industries of the people to his mates in the pub.

To put you out of your misery: Colin Murphy was at the helm at Roots Hall between June 1992 and April 1993 during which time we won just nine matches in 38 games. The only highlight of his short tenure was the fact that he was the man who brought Stan Collymore to Southend United in November 1992. He wrote bizarre notes in the matchday programmes and once said on national TV that "one door is slightly open whilst another is ajar" ...

Hey - I can't help being under 20! (Could be worse, for a moment I thought I read Colin Murray).

Nobody cared when you didn't know who Yeltsin was, but as soon as you suggested you didn't know who Colin Murphy was.....

There are a fair few books about on the history of Southend United, it would be well worth your time trying to get hold of one to find out about the history of the club because: (a) its a fairly interesting read; and (b) it will give you a better perspective on our current fortunes. Alternatively I'm sure you could find a few brief histories on the internet - I think SUSCT have got some info on their site for example.

Once you know a bit more about our 100 years, you'll start to really appreciate what a treat the last few years have been!

I know how torrid the last few years before the Renaisance have been. My brother's firsty game was... Oxford at the Hall I think, way back in the days of Ben Abbey and Dave McSweeney. Got a load of talk from him about how poor we were.

Still, I'll have a look at those books (any titles? Makes it easier to search on Amazon).

Jeez! I feel very old now if the days of Abbey and McSweeney can be considered as "way back"!! ;)

Potted Shrimps is a decent one to start with.

Whilst we are with the books: anyone got any news on the updated Southend United history by Mason and Goody that was originally published in 1992? I have the original - I was an advanced subscriber - but I thought I'd heard something about an update for the centenary celebrations?
