Books by Ex Shrimpers

Just wondered if there were any other autobiographies out there that have a decent chapter or so on SUFC, so far I can only recall ..

Feed the Goat (Shuan Goater MBE)
Tackling My Demons (Stan the Man)
Big Fry (Fat Barry)

Can't think of any other books by former Shrimpers, but I do know that contrary to popular belief "Far From the Madding Crowd" was written by Col Ewe's Greg Halford and not Thomas Hardy.

And "Left Foot in the Grave". But neither of those are autobiographies, they're diaries...

Andy Woodman in his fantastic joint autobiography with Gareth Southgate, Woody and Nord, talks a bit about his time at Roots Hall.

I've pre-ordered 'Che's for the memories: My Roots Hall Story' on Amazon by last season's left-back Che Wilson.

If you can hunt down an English copy of 'Water Unger the Bridge' by Lars Unger, chapter three entitled 'Alvin and Me' mentions Southend one or two times.

Lastly, 'Grade One Soccer' by Mark Beard has a few interesting stories about his two spells at the blues.

We could have lots of fun here. I'm personally looking forward to Fade To Gray: The Wayne Gray Story and my personal favourite, The Only Way Is Jupp: My Autobiography by Duncan Jupp. Very interesting, this one - very committed and heartfelt writing but loses focus at vital times.

Surprised I've beaten XS to it, but the most prolific ex-Shrimper in the publishing trade is surely Ricky Otto, who with his brother Mickey would have churned out many a book as part of their book-binding business!

Very true, HKB! The business, I'm glad to hear, is very much thriving. Both Ricky and Micky have been working their nuts off in association with the British Library to restore the memoirs of Old Father Thames, a river-ting read, if a little washy at times.
