Not sure if anyone has read the article in the late edition of The Echo...

It seem's on top of the £6m? the club are stumping up for town centre improvements, we are also shelling out £8m for highway improvements in the borough too!!

This money will be used for improvements to the Bell and Cuckoo Corner junctions on the A127 into Southend. Part of the money has also been earmarked for improved access to the east of town and the Prittlebrook industrial estate, plus other road improvement schemes around the borough.

Blimey, so that's £14m before we have even started building the stadium!

You have to wonder at Rons sanity sometimes £ 14 mill before building a load of property in a property slump / credit crunch and a load of retail outlets in an economic downturn in a town that that is losing high street names rather than attreacting new ones . The potential upside must be simply massive because the risk , to me , seems huge !

Is this the Blues financing this or Ron Martin and his business personally? If it's the club, where the hell are we finding the money from and surely this is a bit excessive? I know we are a good community club and anxious to maintain good links with the people of the town but that is a bloody big sum to be paying without laying a brick at Fossetts Farm!

I trust Ron and the club to do the right thing but when you read about sums as big as this in the same sentence as SUFC it's enough to put anyone on edge!

I dont think its as clear cut as that. This sort of bartaring goes on all the time and i would imagine RM had factored for it. It wont all be one way traffic. I would imagine that there will be some sort of rate rebate for a set period to compensate for any initial outlay that the council could/would not be able to justify in there own right. It's all about 'means to an end' and a bit of mutual back scratching.

This only happens to Southend United, Middlesbough etc, Doncaster etc get council funding.... Southend United FC have massive potential ( a bit drunk spelling worse than ever :-)) We know this as does Ron Martin... he promised champanship football and a new 22,500 ground... we are sooooooooooo close on both fronts... 30 years ago this was only a dream to me... Vic Jobson ****ed Roots Hall up with knocking down our massive South Stand.... If Ron Martin builds us the new ground I for one will be happy buy a lot more shares in the club I love... many more like me will this will help us move on and get the players to be another Reading FC...

15 years ago we was a bigger club by far than Reading FC when they was a Elms Park... We took hundreds their even when we a crap and had 80 years of being so unlucky If this happened 50 years ago we will be the same size of Norwich city or a Ispwich town Our day is around the corner ever dog has its day.... just TMWLTs here... Shame we never had Ron Martin and Steve Tilson back then.... after 100 years I really believe we have a manager who cares for the club being a local boy who watched us as a boy with Wickford town FC boys and a chairman who at first saw there was money to be made.. BUT has fulling in love with SOUTHEND UNITED FC If Ron delivers god like if he makes a few bob... Vic Jobson robbed our club ...big time... I dont think he wanted to end like it did, but he fell ill and lost it big time 50 % to me and 50% transfer fees to the club

ONE TEAM IN ESSEX
SOUTHEND UNITED FC

WE ALL MARCH TOGETHER :-)

It will seem like money well spent when we are making obscene hand gestures at the Real Madrid team coach as it is en route to a Champions League fixture at new Roots hall.

Ron Martin has asked me to clarify the situation for him. The contribution to road improvements is not £8m, it is £2m with £6m going towards the regeneration and improvement of the town centre. We were happy to agree to that so our development didn't affect the town centre.

Further payments of £2m have been agreed on relocation to help improve the highways, specifically at Cuckoo Roundabout, Sutton Road and Waitrose Roundabout for traffic flow improvement.

That is where the £8m figure comes from, the town centre and highway payments combined. Ron may be generous sometimes, but he is not foolish. These are facilitating payments and we are happy to make them.

That clears things up a bit Scriv. It's good to see that we are keen on keeping up our relationship with the town and the regeneration of the town centre in particular as that was one of the primary criticisms of the new stadium development and the associated retail park. The road improvements are obviously going to help with the movement of traffic to and from the stadium on match days so it's only fair that we contribute to them.

It ws inevitable that the club would have to contribute significantly to the necessary road improvements - strange how it's all been going on for years now though, and the club is, in effect, helping bale the council out.

This is basically a Section 106 agreement. Allows a Client to obtain planning permission for a large development by offsetting some of their finances accross to other needy projects in the area. Happens quite often where serial developers want to limit the percentage of affordable housing they are supposed to incorporate into any residential new build project.
Totally normal, and totally expected to be honest.

I do hope not. A one way system would be horrendous round by Fossetts :D

Yes, and the other terms of the agreement will also be of much & significant interest to us.

Mods: This thread should be in Fossetts ?
