Echo News Blues star Cardwell aims to match standards set last season

SOUTHEND United striker Harry Cardwell wants the high levels he set himself last season to be maintained during the forthcoming National League campaign.

The hard-working forward hit the back of the net 18 times during his most prolific ever season last time around.

But Cardwell is now looking to take that fine form into the 2024/25 campaign which kicks off against York City at Roots Hall on Saturday.

"I want to keep up the standards I set last season and kick on from there too hopefully," said Cardwell.

"Team wise we want to improve on last season too.

"We want to better the points total, get as many wins as we can and see where that takes us come May."

Blues finished ninth last season despite being deducted 10 points for financial irregularities.

However, the Shrimpers start the forthcoming campaign with a new found feel-good factor after the consortium heading up by Justin Rees completed their takeover.

And Cardwell is enjoying the ever-growing excitement levels.

"It's been really positive and uplifting seeing the city come together as one," said the 27-year-old.

"The support we get has always been brilliant but when you see more than 4,000 season cards being sold it's great and we can't wait to see the stadium packed out again."

Blues are expected to be roared on by a large crowd against York this weekend.

But Cardwell is expecting a difficult opener.

"It's a tough start for us," said the striker.

"They picked up towards the back end of last season and they've made some good signings too.

"We'll go in with a game plan though and we've had good and hard pre-season so we'll be looking for three points."

Cardwell looks set to start in attack alongside summer signing Josh Walker.

And he is already enjoying the new partnership.

"He's a fantastic player and a fantastic addition to the squad," said Cardwell.

"He brings something different to us and all the forwards we have now have different qualities which is good."
